<p>In a universal arrangement of objects, from the smallest to the largest, in terms of length, time, and mass, where is the human located? In between the diameter of an atomic nucleus (10-14 meters) and the distance of the farthest galaxy from the earth (1026 meters), the human being occupies a zone between one and three meters. The human lifetime can be measured to be around 109 seconds in temporal length, to the duration of a ray of light passing through a proton (10-24 seconds), to the age of the universe (1017 seconds). And the human mass is located around a 102 kg zone, on a scale from the mass of an electron (10-31 kg), to the mass of the Milky Way galaxy (1041 kg).</p>
<p><span id="more-1600"></span></p>
<p>Based on this data, understanding the human that is trapped in this enormous universe is crucial. Humans are just a speck, jammed between mote and sphere, living in a frail state of weakness and poverty. &#8220;Do not strut about the earth in haughty self-conceit; for you can never split the earth (no matter how hard you stamp your foot), nor can you stretch to the mountains in height (no matter how strenuously you seek to impress)&#8221; (Qur&#8217;an 17:37).</p>
<p>Humans, who need a vast amount of grace and support, are in search of answers to improve themselves. &#8220;Who am I?&#8221; they often ask; &#8220;where am I?&#8221; As scientists and researchers discover the excellence of the universe&#8217;s artistry, we begin to comprehend just how blessed humans are. Within the laws of science lie the answers to our questions. Laws are relative principles that operate according to the constants wisely built into the universe. These laws are veils to the majesty of creation. Each law is created anew every moment, thus we perceive them as if they are eternal patterns. For example, the human body gravitates to the center of the earth with a force equivalent to their mass multiplied by the average gravitational velocity of the earth, which is 9.8 m/s2. The law of gravity is created every moment in such fine measures that it is possible for us to walk on the ground.</p>
<p>It helps to remember Newton&#8217;s three laws in physics. The first is the principle of inertia, which states that unless there is an external force, or if the sum of all forces cancel each other out in direction and size, then an object is either at rest or moves at a constant velocity. The second law is that force equals the mass of an object multiplied with its acceleration. And the third is the action-reaction principle, which states that when a force is applied to an object, the object exerts a force in opposite direction, equal in magnitude. This means that when an apple is thrown into the air, and the apple accelerates in opposition to gravity, the earth is distanced from the apple with the same amount of force. Similarly, when the apple falls down because of gravity, the apple is also pulling the earth with the same magnitude. If this was to repeat constantly, theoretically a movement like the one made by a yo-yo should have happened between the apple and the earth. Because of its huge mass, the earth&#8217;s acceleration is very small, thus this yo-yo movement would not be felt. An object as small as an apple actually moves an object the size of the planet. This means that the power that gave an apple the ability to move the world, also gave us humans the capacity to make use of the natural laws and be a true vicegerent on the earth.</p>
<p>Nothing in the universe has been created in vain – all phenomena occur because of a purpose they are assigned to fulfill. In a universe in which everything is bound by a complicated web of laws that are created without a moment&#8217;s lapse, humankind surely has a significant role to play in the unique position with which they are graced. This position undoubtedly requires a sense of humility in the face of all the grandeur around us, yet also being aware of our given capacities, which enable us to master over all existence.</p>

<p>So, how does it happen? This is just a simple task for the brain. It stores an image and retrieves it whenever a part of it is seen. Amazing features of the brain, especially its power to learn and make decisions, inspires computer scientists in the field of artificial intelligence.</p>
<p>In computer science, an artificial neuron is a simple computational model of a neuron in the brain that excludes biological properties. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are composed of artificial neurons, and they are utilized to solve specific problems, especially those that require learning and decision-making. ANNs may not be the best solutions in various machine learning problems; however, they are accepted as strong alternatives. Although ANNs don’t claim to be so, currently they are not even close to producing a simple model of the brain. Let’s take a short journey into the world of ANNs to experience the extreme difficulty of modeling the brain.</p>
<h3>Some Applications of ANNs</h3>

<p>ANNs have various applications in very large spectrum of problems that require learning, such as the Autonomous Land Vehicle in a Neural Network (ALVINN). The structure of ALVINN is shown in Figure 1. The ALVINN project by Carnegie Mellon University started in 1986 and aims to make a vehicle without a driver (Mitchell, 1997). In this project, ANN learns the steering habits of a driver. A camera is mounted on the vehicle to capture the images of the road. With respect to the continuous images provided, ALVINN determines the steering level with 45 different angle positions from sharp left to sharp right. Steering is updated 15 times per second so that it allows real-time control while driving at 55 mph. The system is trained by the data obtained from a human driver in a simulator and a real vehicle. ALVINN was able to speed up to 70 mph and successfully drive at 55 mph for 90 miles.</p>

<p>Another example is handwritten zip code recognition (LeCun, et al., 1989). Zip codes from US Mail written by various people with large variety of styles and sizes were used in the experiments. Figure 2 presents some examples of zip codes in the experiment database. After the ANN was trained with more than 7,000 digits in the zip codes, it was 99% successful in recognizing around 2,000 digits in new zip codes.</p>
<h3>Learning and Decision-making in ANNs</h3>
<p>In order to understand the challenges better, we will first examine learning and decision-making in neurons and ANNs on simple examples.</p>

<p>Figure 3(a) illustrates a typical neuron which is the constituent of brain’s complicated network structure. Each neuron receives information as signals via dendrites, then evaluates it and generates a signal that is transmitted through its axon. A neuron has many connections between its dendrites and the axons of various other neurons. Figure (b) demonstrates an artificial neuron in computer science. It is considered a function: dendrites as the inputs of the function and generated signal via the axon as the output of the function.</p>
<p>Let’s see an example of an artificial neuron that understands if a given produce is a red apple or not. Think about how you understand whether a produce is a red apple or not. You see the shape and the color. However, it might be an artificial one for decoration. Then you can taste it and you get the sweetness of the apple. Similarly, our neuron receives three pieces of information as the input; ‘has circular shape?’, ‘is sweet?’, and ‘has red color?’. If the output is ‘yes’, that means the neuron recognizes the produce as a red apple. Otherwise, it will be ‘no’, which means the produce is not a red apple (Figure 4). Here, the neuron’s function is defined in such a way that it only generates ‘yes’ when all the inputs are ‘yes’.</p>

<p>In an artificial neuron, some of the information can be more important than the others. For instance, to have red color may be more valuable in determining the price of produce. Assume that round shape and sweetness has equal value of $1; however, having red color is $2 – twice as valuable as the other features (Figure 5).</p>

<p>So, what is the big fuss about artificial neurons if they are only functions? In fact, the main feature of artificial neurons is learning. Considering the last example above, the neuron initially does not know the importance of the dendrites, i.e. the weights of inputs are all the same. If not trained, the neuron will generate the following answers which are sometimes wrong as indicated in Table 1.</p>

<p>In real life, a teacher trains students. For instance, the teacher asks a question and if the received answer is not correct, she provides the right answer. Students learn the right answer and use this correct information in their lives. It is similar in artificial neurons as depicted in Figure 6. When the response of the neuron is incorrect, it adjusts the importance of the dendrites with respect to the correct answer hence it answers the same question correctly next time. During the training session, the neurons will be continuously asked the values of all the produce until it learns them all.</p>

<p>What if the problem gets complicated? Then one artificial neuron will not be sufficient, and we will need a network of neurons; ANNs. A more complex problem, ‘learning the digits’ is indicated in Figure 7.</p>

<p>ANN has 3 x 5 = 15 input units like receptors of an eye retina. Each input unit corresponds to one square in the digits; either filled or blank. Each input unit is connected to the dendrites of all neurons in the middle layer. The output of each cell in the middle is connected to the dendrites of all neurons in the output layer. There are 10 output neurons corresponding to the digits from 0 to 9. After the ANN is trained, it provides a correct answer to the given digit as input. When digit ‘3’ is provided to the network, the neuron labeled with number ‘3’ in Figure 7(b) is triggered and outputs ‘yes’ whereas the rest of the neurons output ‘no’.</p>

<p>Initially, all neurons in the network have equally weighted dendrites. After a reasonable amount of training, neurons adjust their weights, and ANN is able to identify digits. Here, we have some major challenges: what does ‘reasonable amount of training’ mean? When the ANN is undertrained, it will not always answer correctly to the digits given in Figure (a). In the other case, when the ANN is overtrained, it will memorize the digits provided during the training and will not recognize the faulty ones such as the one in Figure 8.</p>
<h3>Challenges of ANNs</h3>
<p>Beyond the mentioned the overtraining / undertraining problems, ANNs have a bigger challenge – how to determine the structure of ANN that fits the problem? In the digit learning example, we’re lucky because the structure is provided in Figure 7(b). However, the outcome of the solution may drastically depend on the number of neurons and the connections among them which is indeed a hard problem for ANNs.</p>
<p>The huge capability of the brain in learning and decision making comes from the huge number of neurons – around 100 billion – and the enormous amount of connections among them – from 100 to 500 trillion. The challenge to design such a huge network requires huge computation power. With the increasing number of neurons, ANN dramatically slows down especially during the learning process. Here, our example is a simple learning task of 3&#215;5 pixel digits compared to the brain’s acquisition capacity of hundreds of images in our daily life. </p>
<p>When the number of neurons gets larger, the reliability of network also reduces. Small adjustments in weights may change the entire behavior of the network hence it is easy to lose control of ANN. In contrast, the brain has a robust system, and its fault tolerance is admirable. Although neurons die every day, this doesn’t affect its performance significantly. The training method and how to update the weights are other hard problems leading to many different approaches in the neural computation field.</p>
<p>We have presented some simple tasks that can be solved using a few neurons and their challenges. On the other hand, consider the thousands of problems, various and incredible amount of information we have learned, and the thousands of decisions we make. <p>We recognize and perceive that which exists and evaluate that which is happening around us by using our natural senses, intelligence, and experience; as a result we are able to make inferences about the world through methods of deduction or induction. Positivism claims that the only true and valid knowledge is that which is based on actual sensual experience. According to materialism, the only thing that can be truly proven to exist is matter. In general, in analyzing matter and physical phenomena the deterministic approach is employed; all events are thought to be unavoidable consequences of the preceding sufficient causes. Sometimes the deterministic descriptions and formulations may end up in chaos. Chaos theory deals with the chaotic character of such formulations qualitatively. The quantum theory could also be interpreted as a deterministic tool that describes physical phenomena, more specifically, the behavior of matter and energy, within a range of probabilistic likelihood.</p>
<p><span id="more-1104"></span></p>
<p>Some philosophers tend to include other factors in the cognitive faculties and the means that shape human perception and cognition: for example, emotions and intuition (e.g. Kant, Bergson). This apparently is a diversion from materialism and the deterministic point of view. The human being is not only an elegant combination of atoms; we also have a part that is not a function of matter or time: and this is the soul. If we restrict ourselves only to the natural senses and matter, as the positivist and materialist approaches do, then severe limitations on human perception are imposed, as demonstrated below. In general, it is not possible to perceive the truth completely without using all of one’s cognitive faculties. The question is then, how can a new program of reasoning be systematized to combine the senses and mind along with the emotions and intuition in a coherent manner? This novel program, which is called <em>qualitative inference, </em> is defined in this article using examples; however, first there is a brief introduction to a related topic, known as <em>qualitative reasoning. </em></p>
<p>Qualitative reasoning is a relatively new approach in the estimation of possible solutions to real-world problems through non-quantitative reasoning. This approach provides a program to reason about the behavior of physical systems, such as the physiology of the human body, automobiles, etc., especially in the case of <em>inexact or incomplete data, </em>or when there is a lack of the precise quantitative information that is required by conventional methods. Qualitative models are more able to express states of incomplete knowledge about continuous mechanisms than traditional models which have been developed for the analysis of physical phenomena, as the former guarantees the ability to find all possible behaviors consistent with the knowledge in the model.</p>
<p><em>To get a flavor of what is meant by qualitative reasoning, consider this everyday scenario: You are confronted with a water-filled pan on a lit stove. You can easily predict that the pan will warm up, which will warm the water. At some point, the water will start to boil, and the pan might eventually become empty. To make these predictions, the exact values of the variables involved, such as the amount of water, the temperatures of the stove and the water, or the boiling temperature need not be known. </em></p>
<p>Observing pouring rain and a river&#8217;s steadily rising water level is sufficient to make a prudent person take measures against possible flooding-without knowing the exact water level, the rate of change, or the time the river might flood.</p>
<p><em>Qualitative inference</em> is a program of qualitative reasoning that extends inference to the non-physical aspects of physical information, including reason, the relation between subjects and objects, etc. The universe itself is a great set of information, but this may not be exact or complete enough for metaphysical inductions. Needless to say, any such possible inductions should be consistent with known physical information. Consequently, in qualitative inference, the two key points we are referring to, namely <em>the use of incomplete or inexact data and consistency with physical knowledge, </em> are crucial.</p>
<p>While the deterministic approach could be considered to be the interpolation of existing physical knowledge and information in order to justify what is known or to discover what is unknown, qualitative inference can provide a tool for the <em>extrapolation</em> of existing physical knowledge and information. It can be used to reach what is unknown, physically unobservable, or even impossible to validate, regenerate, repeat, comprehend, or completely embrace by using standard scientific techniques.</p>
<h3><b>Qualitative inference</b></h3>
<p>With some examples we will explain how qualitative inference can be applied to everyday, real life experiences for inferences and inductions that are beyond our physical world.</p>
<h3><b>A coincidence or a gift? </b></h3>
<p>Let us take the example of a package sent to a person in the mail. Let us specify that it is a shirt. Let us further specify that the color of the shirt is the favorite color of the receiver, it fits him very well, the design is his preference, and the brand and the fabric of the shirt are those that he generally chooses. Based on this information, as it is incomplete, it would be difficult to answer questions about the possible relationship between the sender and receiver, the purpose of this shipment, etc. from a positivist or deterministic point of view. Through qualitative inference one could conclude, however, that the sender is someone who knows and is close to the receiver, who would like to please him likely because the sender likes him, and that the shirt has been mailed as a gift. This inference is obviously consistent with the known information. If we were to exclude the sense of love, enjoyment, pleasure, and closeness between two people it would not be possible to make these conclusions.</p>
<h3><b>The apple</b></h3>
<p>The apple is one of the most abundant types of fruit on the earth. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” goes an old saying. Doctors in modern times agree that the apple is important as a nutrient. An apple with its skin includes about 4 grams of dietary fibers. Potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and selenium are minerals that can be found in an apple in different amounts. It also contains small amounts of iron, manganese, copper and zinc. The vitamins contained in an apple include vitamins A, C, E, and folic acid, which is an important nutrient during pregnancy. While eating an apple, one also strengthens the gingiva gums often without being aware that this is happening. The different colors of apples are very pleasant, as are their smell. How many artists have used the apple as their subject, due to its compelling beauty? It leaves a pleasant taste on the tongue and in the mouth. Many cuisines would be severely handicapped without the apple as an ingredient. The size is just right to grasp in the hand, and its flesh is succulent to bite. Different types of apples give the feeling of experiencing a new thing, yet remaining within the limits of our acquaintance. Apples are attractive and important sources of nutrients for animals as well. There is so much more to say about the apple and its importance to human and animal life, about how it is a very good source of nutrients that matches our needs, and addresses our tastes and pleasures.</p>
<p>With this information, the positivist perspective looks at the apple itself, its attributes, nutritional value, material properties, as well as the physical functions of the human being, and their need for the nutrients that are naturally included in the apple. This physical information, although valuable, is incomplete in understanding the perfect correlation between not only the need of the human being, but also our sense of taste and the apple, as we have briefly summarized above. Through qualitative inference, however, one could conclude that apple is a gift not only to the human being, but to most other living creatures, much like the shirt that was sent as a gift in the example above. This conclusion does not include any contradictions with the known, but incomplete, physical information. Although the sender of this gift is not known, one can infer that such a being exists and this being knows the human very well and is able to make and send this gift via the trees; this being possibly likes human beings and others who benefit from the apple, and likes to please them. However, without reference to the senses of love, enjoyment, and pleasure, it would not be possible to derive such conclusions.</p>
<h3><b>Robot vs. mother</b></h3>
<p>Now, we will consider another event, that in which a mother prepares food for her child. If she is feeding the baby with a formula, the steps she is likely to follow are sterilizing the bottle, boiling the water, refrigerating the water or waiting for the water to reach the appropriate temperature to mix the formula with the water, and stirring it carefully and thoroughly to make this a pleasant experience for her baby. From time to time, the order, attention of the mother, and duration of the steps may change without a clear difference in the underlying conditions. If one were to study this case scientifically, from a positivist perspective, then one would study the temperature of the water, the hygiene of the bottle, the actions of the mother, etc. for some possible inferences. But, these would be far from being a complete account of the situation and cannot reflect the entire picture or truth. The main point that a prudent person can derive from these scenes is clearly the mercy, compassion, and love of the mother towards her baby. This is the fact and main motivation that ensures that the mother take the actions mentioned above voluntarily, willingly, carefully, and repeatedly.</p>
<h3><b>The Earth’s circulatory system</b></h3>
<p>With this example in mind, let’s now review what we learned in high school about the earth’s circulatory system, a wonderful mechanism that purifies, cleans, and processes the water, the most important factor of the life. Human beings can survive for only a few days without water. Water is stored under the ground in natural reservoirs, whose formation alone is the topic for a series of scientific articles. Although the temperature increases as one approaches the center of the earth, sometimes the water comes to the surface at very cold temperatures; such cold clear water is the most desired substance on a hot, sunny day. Rain drops in their natural form are pure water and do not have a pleasant taste. These rain drops and the water used by people or animals is processed, that is, the water is cleaned, filtrated, and purified under ground. Minerals essential to human and animal life and some chemicals that naturally exist in the soil mix with the water. The addition of all these substances is good not only for the water’s nutritional value, but also creates a more pleasant taste. It is with these constituents that water becomes an essential nutrient for human beings and animals. Some of these additions are fluorine that strengthens the bones, fluoride, which is beneficial in low concentrations, sodium, potassium, and chloride, all of which play a role in the metabolism of the body. When the water comes to the surface as hot water, it can be used as a treatment for some diseases. The water is not processed only under the ground, as we have described here, but surface water is also atomized for the ultimate purification. When water evaporates, the vapor rises to a certain location in the atmosphere, accumulates there and forms clouds (which are a subject matter for poets, due to their beauty, especially when they appear on a sunny day). When water is condensed and catalyzed by the wind, the vapor returns to the earth as rain drops to complete the cycle.</p>
<p>Each step in the mechanism of circulatory system mentioned above can be analyzed scientifically, from a positivist perspective, to attain useful and important information. On the other hand, these results will never allow us to make inferences about the reason behind the perfect correlation between the needs of human beings and other living creatures and the availability of water in its most useful form as an essential nutrient with a pleasant taste, or the continuous availability of clean, fresh water for the living creatures who have no control over never-failing mechanism of the circulatory system, or the availability of water with the perfect chemical combination that allows coexistence of water in three different physical forms (ice, water, and vapor). On the other hand, using such incomplete physical information, namely the perfect match between the nature, properties, and availability of water, and the needs, the sense of taste of living creatures, a sensible person could easily infer that there is a hidden mercy and compassion acting behind the scenes, just as with the case of the mother preparing food for her baby. Without this qualitative inference, which is consistent with the known physical information and refers further to the sense of mercy and compassion, the entire picture of this phenomena and the truth can never be captured, regardless of scientific developments, the technology used in labs, or the computer systems that can carry out extremely complicated computations.</p>
<h3><b>Conclusion</b></h3>
<p>Qualitative inference leads us to arrive at conclusions about the non-physical or metaphysical aspects of physical phenomena. This program of reasoning considers physical phenomena and the universe as an incomplete source of information for understanding the metaphysical aspects of the physical world, helps us to make inferences that are consistent with this incomplete physical information, and to use all our cognitive faculties, including intelligence, senses, intuition, and even emotions, to arrive at non-physical inferences. Qualitative inference leads one to consider the apple as a gift and the availability of the fresh water through the natural water cycle as an indication of universal compassion and mercy for all living creatures; no living creature would be able to carry out such a process on their own. Without this reasoning, as exemplified above, only a very limited portion of natural phenomena can be understood sufficiently; the main points will always be missing or overlooked.</p>
<p>Through the same program of reasoning, a gift necessitates a loving sender, universal compassion and mercy requires a being that is compassionate and merciful. Just like the case studies presented above, all real life events have similar messages that can be understood by those who do not restrict themselves to physical nature. All physical events, for example, indicate a universal consciousness that implies the existence of someone who is conscious of everything. Such a being should be able to do all these things according to His will, so He is All Mighty&#8230; These examples shed light onto some of His attributes, such as His mercy, compassion, will, might, and consciousness. When other phenomena are analyzed in a similar manner, one can discover other essential attributes of this Supreme Being. As a result, qualitative reasoning not only proves the existence of the Supreme Being, it provides a useful tool in understanding His attributes.</p>
<p>Similarly, the rebirth of trees, insects, and the earth as a whole every spring after their death in the winter is a physical phenomena that we have all experienced. This information, through qualitative inference, can lead us to understand the Hereafter, that is, the resurrection of all human beings in another world. All the attributes of the Supreme Being mentioned above also support this inference. Mercy cannot be absolute and universal, for example, if the oppressed people and tyranny are treated the same; unfortunately, this is what seems to be happening in this world.</p>
<p>In brief, positivist and materialist approaches impose severe limitations on human perception. In reality, all the cognitive faculties of the human being play roles in our evaluation of our being, our position and role in this world, and our relation to others. The truth can only be obtained by a person through the systematic use of all such faculties. Qualitative inference suggests a program for doing so. While the positivist approach puts mankind into the position of being an observer of the things they can touch or see by invalidating all other sources of knowledge, qualitative inference allows one to address the non-physical or metaphysical aspects of the physical phenomena by freeing all of our cognitive faculties, and in particular allows to be a believer while observing the universe in a similar manner.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We humans have a tendency to overlook the marvelous aspects of things we witness regularly. To the parents of a newborn baby, the healthy birth is a clear miracle. To the doctor, this may be just another day at work. We marvel at the tiniest possible signs of water on a distant planet such as Mars. Yet, the abundance of water on Earth does not impress us. A person who fasts understands the value of a piece of bread deep in their heart. Yet most of us fail to appreciate the delicious food we eat everyday. The list is endless. In this article we will try to draw attention to the marvelous aspects of our sustenance in this world and explore two perspectives that provide, or attempt to provide, an explanation for their existence. In particular, we will look at the apple, honey, and milk.</p>
<h3><b>The apple</b></h3>
<p>Most people think of an apple as a perfect example of beauty, joy, and health. Indeed, the apple is endowed with a shape that is appealing to the human eye, a beautiful range of colors, a pleasant taste and a long list of health benefits for humans. These , (1) containing two types of fibers that work in tandem to lower blood cholesterol levels, (2) helping to prevent heart disease, (3) cancer-protective activity, (4) helping remove toxic substances, such as lead and mercury from the blood, and (5) helping to reduce the risk of kidney stones. A major survey published in the May 2004 issue of the Nutrition Journal provided a review of 85 studies and identified a number of health benefits of apples, including the ability to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, asthma, and type II diabetes when compared to other fruits and vegetables. In addition, eating apples has also been associated with increased lung function and increased weight loss.1</p>
<p>Now consider all these benefits and look at how we get apples. An apple tree knows nothing about humans. An apple knows nothing about the human visual system, tastes, or body functions. How is it then that an apple is so appealing and beneficial for humans?</p>
<h3><b>Honey</b></h3>
<p>Honey is one of the substances produced by honeybees. In addition to being a nutritive sweetener, medical research has also found that the unique composition of honey makes it useful as an antimicrobial agent and antioxidant. These effects are due to a substance called “propolis,” which the honeybees make by combining tree sap with their own secretions. They use propolis as an anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal substance to protect the honeycomb. It has been found that propolis contains well-researched anti-cancer substances, such as caffeic acid methyl caffeate, phenylethyl caffeate, and phenylethyl dimethylcaffeate. Daily consumption of honey raises the levels of protective antioxidant compounds in the blood level in humans, according to research presented at the 227th meeting of the American Chemical Society in Anaheim, CA, March 28, 2004.2 Furthermore, researchers have discovered that these substances in propolis prevent colon cancer in animals.3 New studies are also looking into honey as an agent for increasing athletic performance and as a wound-healing agent. Honey has been a popular traditional remedy for many medical conditions.</p>
<p>Now consider these benefits of honey and how we obtain honey: Honeybees know nothing about humans. In fact, if they are agitated, they may sting humans and sometimes cause their death. The honey they make, however, has so many healing benefits that honey has been used in many foods, herbal supplements and, beauty products. The same question comes to mind: How did this come to be?</p>
<h3><b>Milk</b></h3>
<p>Milk is produced by mammals. In particular, cows, sheep, and goats produce milk that is consumed in many cultures.</p>
<p>Cow’s milk, for example, and the dairy products derived from it, promote strong bones by being a very good source of vitamin D and calcium, and a good source of vitamin K-three nutrients essential to bone health. Calcium has long been recognized for its role in building healthy bones. This is not the only benefit of calcium, however. Recent studies have shown other benefits such as helping protect colon cells from cancer-causing chemicals, helping prevent the bone loss that can occur as a result of menopause or certain conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, and helping to prevent migraine headaches in those who suffer from them.</p>
<p>Other essential nutrients in milk include iodine, a mineral essential for thyroid function, riboflavin and vitamin B12, which are necessary for cardiovascular health and energy production, vitamin A, a critical nutrient for immune function, and potassium, a nutrient important for cardiovascular health.4 Researchers have found that a beneficial fatty acid called CLA inhibited several types of cancer in mice. Test tube studies also indicated that this compound kills human skin cancer, colorectal cancer and breast-cancer cells. There are other indications of benefits of CLA, such as helping lower cholesterol and prevent atherosclerosis.(5)</p>
<p>The cow, the sheep, and the goat know nothing about humans. They do not know how our body functions or what our sense of taste is. Yet, the milk they produce serves as a tasty and healthy food. The same question arises: How did this come to be?</p>
<p>Humans also produce other nutritious foods from milk, such as cheese and yogurt. Yogurt is particularly interesting because it is made with the help of beneficial bacteria called L. bulgaricus and S. thermophilus. Everyone has bacteria inside their bodies; especially in the stomach and intestines where food is broken up and digested. Eating yogurt encourages the beneficial types of bacteria to multiply in your digestive track, helping protect the system against harmful microorganisms that cause stomach upsets and infection. Some people cannot drink milk due to lactose intolerance, yet they can consume yogurt. The emerging health benefits of yogurt include boosting the immune system, lowering serum cholesterol, and helping in the prevention and management of certain cancers. In addition, yogurt is a good source of protein, calcium, potassium, vitamins B12, and riboflavin.</p>
<p>Now let us turn to the two perspectives that explain, or attempt to explain, how these health-giving substances reach us: The “bounty” perspective and the “chance” perspective. Let us explore these two perspectives in more detail. First, the bounty perspective.</p>
<h3><b>The bounty perspective</b></h3>
<p>The bounty perspective suggests that the delicious and beneficial foods we enjoy in this world are bounties of a God with infinite knowledge and wisdom.(6, 7) God knows us because He has created us. He knows what benefits us and what harms us. He loves us and He wants to show us His love through signs. The bounties, which include foods among others, are designed to benefit us and appeal to us. In return for these bounties, He expects us to recognize Him as our Lord, our Creator, and Sustainer. He expects us to feel thankful to Him and to express our thanks through worship.</p>
<p>The basis for the bounty perspective can be found in the scriptures of the Abrahamic religions, Judaism and Christianity, as well as in the Qur’an. The first example is from the Bible: <em>Every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if received with thanksgiving</em> (1 Tim. 4). Another example, from David’s Psalms as they appear in the Bible states: <em>Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. </em> (Psalms, 100). A striking example from the works of St. Paul is the following:</p>
<p>And so He gathered together a people for Himself, and fostered them with many liberal distributions of His bounty, and, after so often finding them most ungrateful, ever exhorted them to repentance and sent out the voices of the universal company of the prophets to prophesy.</p>
<p>The sixth chapter of the Qur’an is entitled “Cattle,” and mentions some benefits of domesticated animals, as well as dispersing some myths and false beliefs about them:</p>
<p>And of cattle (He created) beasts of burden and those which are fit for slaughter only; eat of what God has given you and do not follow the footsteps of the Satan; surely he is your manifest enemy. (An’am 6:142)</p>
<p>The following Qur’anic verses mention cattle and milk explicitly:</p>
<p>And God has sent down water from the cloud and therewith given life to the earth after its death; most surely there is a sign in this for a people who would listen. And most surely there is a lesson for you in the cattle; We give you to drink of what is in their bellies-from between the feces and the blood-pure milk, easy and agreeable to swallow for those who drink. And of the fruits of the palms and the grapes-you obtain from them intoxication and goodly provision; most surely there is a sign in this for a people who ponder. (Nahl 16:65-67)</p>
<p>In the following verse, the honeybee is mentioned by name, as well as the various semi-liquid substances that they produce, including honey:</p>
<p>And your Lord revealed to the bee saying: Make hives in the mountains and in the trees and in what they build: Then eat of all the fruits and walk in the ways of your Lord submissively. There comes forth from within it a beverage of many colors, in which there is healing for men; most surely there is a sign in this for a people who reflect. (Nahl 16:68-69)</p>
<h3><b>The chance perspective</b></h3>
<p>The chance perspective is based on Darwin’s theory of evolution, where there is no place for a merciful God.9, 10 It attributes the phenomenon of these health-giving foods to chance working with natural selection over time. It asserts that early humans or their supposed ancestors have experienced a random mutation (a change in the genetic code), which caused some of them to like apples. Those who liked apples ate them and benefited in turn. These benefits have given them a competitive advantage over others who did not like apples. Those who liked apples were able to survive better under difficult circumstances and produced more offspring than others. Through many generations, those humans who did not like apples have disappeared and today almost all humans enjoy and benefit from apples.</p>
<h3><b>Consequences</b></h3>
<p>The consequences of the two perspectives are completely different. If all health-giving natural products are loved for themselves, if they are thoughtlessly delighted in only for the material pleasures that they yield, that love is merely the love of self. Also, those pleasures are transient and bring pain. People with this perspective are likely to be selfish, stingy, and wasteful. But, if they are loved as favors proceeding from Almighty God’s mercy and as fruits of His munificence, and if pleasure is obtained from them with good judgment by appreciating the degree of kindness in that munificence and favor, then this is both gratitude and is a pain-free pleasure. People with this perspective are likely to be thankful, prudent, and caring for those who are in need.</p>
<p>To better understand the difference in the nature and consequences of these two perspectives let us consider the following parable 11:</p>
<p>If a mighty king were to bestow a gift on you, such as an apple, there would be two joys in that apple for you. The first of these is that the apple would be loved because it is an apple, and there would be a pleasure peculiar to and to the extent of the apple. This love does not concern the king. A person, who puts the apple to his mouth and eats it in the king’s presence, without offering his appreciation to the king, loves the apple itself and his own soul rather than the king. The king is likely not to be pleased with this person’s attitude, despite the fact that he enjoys the apple. Moreover, the pleasure that the apple gives is very limited and passes quickly. After the apple is eaten it is gone, only regret remains.</p>
<p>As for the second kind of joy, it is for the royal favor that is demonstrated by means of the apple. One who holds the apple precious, as if it were the sample and embodiment of a royal favor, shows that he loves his king. Moreover, the pleasure in that fruit, which is a sort of container for the favor, is such that it is far greater than the pleasure obtained from a thousand apples. This pleasure, then, is the essence of thankfulness. This love is a respectful love for the king.</p>
<h3><b>Conclusion</b></h3>
<p>We have presented two explanations for the phenomenon of the presence of health-giving foods in nature and for the abundance of appealing and beneficial food on Earth, such as apples, honey, and milk that are produced by plants and animals that know nothing about humans. The bounty explanation asserts that these are the bounties of a Merciful and Infinitely-Wise Creator who expects us to recognize these as bounties and be thankful to Him. The chance perspective attributes this situation to random mutations and natural selection working over time. Because God works through laws in this world, we cannot see His hand of mercy in action with the eyes in our heads. However, can we see signs of this mercy with the eyes in our heart? This is a challenge for the inquisitive mind.</p>
<p>That is God, your Lord, there is no god but He; the Creator of all things, therefore serve Him, and He has charge of all things. Vision comprehends Him not, and He comprehends (all) vision; and He is the Knower of subtleties, the Aware. Indeed there have come to you clear proofs from your Lord; whoever will therefore see, it is for his own soul and whoever will be blind, it shall be against himself and I am not a keeper over you. (An’am 6:102-104) </p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Love is an innate human trait. To love and to be loved are among the most basic human needs. But while love is probably our greatest source of pleasure, it also has the potential to be our greatest source of sorrow. When thinking about love, one cannot help but ask: &#8220;Can we love without experiencing pain or suffering as a consequence?&#8221; In this article, we will look at an answer to this important question.</p>
<p>As love is an innate need, we love delicious foods and fruits; our parents, spouse, children, friends, and companions; pious people, Prophets, and saints; life and youth; the season of spring, beautiful things, and the world. When all of these things and people either abandon us, due to their absence, whether temporary or permanent, or cause us to suffer, due to their own sufferings (e.g., illness, death, old age) that touch our hearts, we cannot help but ask: &#8220;Since I cannot stop myself from loving them, can I love them in a way that will not cause me any pain?&#8221; Is there a recipe for painless love?</p>
<p>By means of the will, love&#8217;s face may turn from one object of love to another. For example, when a beloved displays some ugliness or shows that he or she is a veil or mirror to another beloved, who is truly worthy of love, then love&#8217;s face may be turned from the metaphorical beloved to the true beloved.</p>
<h3><b>Recipe for painless love</b></h3>
<p>Love may cause pain due to one&#8217;s separation from the beloved, the beloved&#8217;s decline, or the beloved&#8217;s lack of response. In order to experience painless love, then, the subject of our love must be everlasting, immune to decline, and sure to respond. Only God, Who is eternal and everlasting, does not decline, and always answers our love for Him, has these attributes.</p>
<p>Therefore, the recipe for painless love is to dedicate our true love to God and to love everything for His sake. It is unreasonable to expect a person not to love that which he or she loves. But it is possible to love them for God Almighty&#8217;s sake and in the name of His Love? Let&#8217;s consider some examples:</p>
<h3><b>Love of delicious food</b></h3>
<p>The love of delicious food and luscious fruit can be changed to a love for God&#8217;s sake by seeing them as the bounties of God Almighty, the All-Merciful and Compassionate One. In this way, our love for them becomes a love of His Names, the All-Merciful and the Bestower of Bounties. Moreover, it takes on the meaning of thanks. Such love seeks gain contentedly within the sphere what is permissible, thereby showing that it is both for the sake of the instinctual soul and in the name of the All-Merciful One. It is to enjoy something thoughtfully and with gratitude.</p>
<h3><b>Love of parents</b></h3>
<p>Love and respect for one&#8217;s parents, for the sake of the Divine Wisdom and Mercy that compassionately entrusted you to them and caused them to bring you up with tender care, pertain to God Almighty&#8217;s love. The sign that this love, respect, and compassion are for God&#8217;s sake is that when they are old, useless, and troublesome, we become even more loving, kind, and compassionate toward them. The Qur&#8217;anic verse: Your Lord has enjoined you to worship none but Him, and to show kindness to your parents. Should one of them, or both, attain to old age in your care, never say to them a single word of contempt, nor rebuke them, but speak to them kind words (17:23), exemplifies this attitude. Being kind to parents also is mentioned in Qur&#8217;an 2:83, 2:215, 4:36, 6:151, 17:23-24, 19:14, 19:32, 29:8, 31:14, 46:15, and 71:28.</p>
<p>God&#8217;s Unity and not associating any partners with Him is the Qur&#8217;an&#8217;s most important message. Yet in the Qur&#8217;an 2:83, 6:151, 17:23, 31:14, treating one&#8217;s parents with kindness is ordered right after this most important principle. This demonstrates how important our parents&#8217; rights are, and how ugly it would be to show any ingratitude to them.</p>
<p>Parents deserve their children&#8217;s utmost love and compassion. A father desires that his children, more than anyone else, be much better than himself. Furthermore, the children cannot claim any rights over their father. In other words, there is no inherent cause for dispute between parents and children, for disputes arise from envy and jealousy, neither of which the father feels toward his children. Or they arise from an abuse of rights, and the children are not in a position to claim any rights against their father. If a father does not fulfill his responsibilities or if he abuses his children it may not be reasonable to expect the children to be respectful of his behavior. But this does not necessitate rebellion in other affairs nor does it justify showing disrespect. Under such circumstances, the children can still obey their father in manners approved by God and pray for him.</p>
<p>Even more importantly, the mother deserves the highest degree of everyone&#8217;s love and respect. In an authenticated prophetic tradition, Prophet Muhammad says: &#8220;Paradise lies beneath the feet of mothers&#8221; (Ahmad, Nasai). It is also reported in the prophetic tradition that a man came to the Prophet and said, &#8216;O Messenger of God! Who among the people is the most worthy of my good companionship?&#8217; The Prophet said: &#8216;Your mother.&#8217; The man said, &#8216;Then who?&#8217; The Prophet said: &#8216;Then your mother.&#8217; The man further asked, &#8216;Then who?&#8217; The Prophet said: &#8216;Then your mother.&#8217; The man asked again, &#8216;Then who?&#8217; The Prophet said: &#8216;Then your father.&#8217; (Bukhari, Muslim).</p>
<h3><b>Love of children</b></h3>
<p>The love and protection of children with complete compassion and tenderness pertain to God when we see them as gifts of the All-Compassionate and Generous One. The sign indicating that this love is for Almighty God&#8217;s sake is the display of patience and thankfulness when they die, rather than crying out in despair. It is to say: &#8220;He/she was a lovable little person created and owned by my Creator, Who entrusted him/her to my supervision. Now that His wisdom requires it to be thus, He has taken him/her from me &#8230; to a better place. If I had one apparent share in that little person, 1,000 true shares belonged to his/her Creator.&#8221; It is to submit by saying: &#8220;All authority is with God.&#8221;</p>
<h3><b>Love of friends</b></h3>
<p>As for friends and acquaintances, if they are friends of God Almighty due to their belief and good works, according to the meaning of &#8220;love for God&#8217;s sake,&#8221; that love also pertains to God.</p>
<h3><b>Love of spouse</b></h3>
<p>Love between spouses is for God&#8217;s sake when it is not conditioned on transient attributes. A husband loves and cherishes his wife as a companionable and gracious gift of Divine Mercy. He does not fasten his love to her physical beauty, which swiftly fades. Rather, a woman&#8217;s most attractive and agreeable beauty is her fine character, which accompanies her unique delicacy and refinement.</p>
<p>Her most precious and sweet beauty is her earnest, sincere, sublime, and luminous compassion. This beautiful tenderness and fine character continues and increases until the end of her life. Moreover, that weak and delicate person&#8217;s rights of respect are protected by that love. Otherwise, she will lose her rights when her superficial beauty fades, a time when she most needs them.</p>
<p>Similarly, a wife loves her husband not for his looks, strength, or wealth, as these are only transient things. Instead she loves him as her everlasting companion in the garden of Paradise, and as a compassionate partner in this world who sacrifices his time, energy, and wealth for his family&#8217;s well-being.</p>
<h3><b>Love of pious people</b></h3>
<p>Our love of the Prophets and saints as God Almighty&#8217;s most esteemed servants is for His sake and in His Name, and not for their persons. In this form, it pertains to Him. Such love, if not done for God&#8217;s sake, may cause us to turn them into idols.</p>
<p><b>Love of life and youth</b></p>
<p>Our love of life is for God&#8217;s sake when we love and preserve life as the most precious wealth and capital that will gain us a happy eternal life. We see life as a comprehensive treasury yielding eternal perfections, something that Almighty God has given to us and to all humanity. When we employ our time, which is what life is made of, in His service, our love of life pertains to the True Object of Worship. Similarly, our love of youth becomes a painless love when we see it as a fine, sweet, and beautiful bounty of Almighty God and put it to proper use in God&#8217;s guidance.</p>
<h3><b>Love of the spring and this world</b></h3>
<p>Our love of the spring turns into a love of His Names when we love it thoughtfully as being the page of the subtlest and most beautiful inscriptions of Almighty God&#8217;s luminous Names. In this perspective, we see the spring as the most finely adorned and glittering exhibition of the All-Wise Maker&#8217;s supreme art. Similarly, our love of this world can be for God&#8217;s sake when we love it as the tillage for the Hereafter, as a mirror of the Divine Names, and a missive of God Almighty. We see it as a temporary guesthouse in which we train our souls to reach spiritual heights by struggling against the carnal self&#8217;s evil commands.</p>
<p>In short, loving for God&#8217;s sake requires that we love this world and its inhabitants as indicating, like words, a meaning beyond themselves, rather than loving them just for themselves. When we see a beautiful member of creation we say: &#8220;How beautifully it has been made&#8221; instead of &#8220;How beautiful it is.&#8221;</p>
<p>True love for God&#8217;s sake does not give any opportunity for other loves to enter one&#8217;s inner heart, because the inner heart is the mirror of God, the Eternally Besought One, and pertains only to Him. This love is crystallized in the following prayer: &#8220;O God, grant us love for You, and love for that which will draw us closer to You.&#8221;</p>
<p>When it assumes this form, each type of love enumerated above gives a painless pleasure, and, in one respect, leads to an unending union. Moreover, all of them increase our love of God. Due to their connection with the Eternal One, these forms of love are feelings of gratitude and a source of pure pleasure and joy.</p>
<h3><b>The parable of the apple</b></h3>
<p>To understand the difference between loving something for its own sake, as opposed to loving it for its giver&#8217;s sake, consider the following parable: If a mighty king were to give you an apple, there would be two types of love for that apple and two types of pleasure in it. First, you would love the apple because it is beautiful and delicious. The pleasure associated with this love is specific to, and is concerned only with the existence of, the apple. This love does not concern the king. Those who feel this kind of love, who eat the apple in the king&#8217;s presence, love the apple itself and their own souls rather than the king. The king is not pleased with the type of love that nourishes the instinctual soul; in fact, he detests it. Moreover, the pleasure that the apple gives is very limited and passes quickly. After it has been eaten, only the regret of its departure remains.</p>
<p>The second type of love, however, acknowledges the king&#8217;s favor. Those who consider the apple to be something precious, as if it were the sample and embodiment of a royal favor, show their love for their king. Moreover, the pleasure in that fruit, which is a sort of container for the favor, is far greater than the pleasure obtained from 1,000 apples. This pleasure, then, is the essence of thankfulness, and this love is a respectful love for the king.</p>
<h3><b>Conclusion</b></h3>
<p>If we love all bounties and fruits for themselves and delight in them only for the material pleasures that they yield, our love is merely love of self. Also, such pleasures are transient and bring pain. But if they are loved as favors proceeding from God&#8217;s Mercy and as fruits of His Munificence, then they always remind us of their source.</p>
<p>When the pleasure is obtained from them with a good appetite, appreciating the degree of kindness in that Divine Munificence and Favor, then it has both the meaning of gratitude and is a pain-free pleasure. The taste of the fruit may vanish, but the Giver of the gift of fruit is eternal. The beloved may die, but the Creator and the Sustainer of every being is eternally alive. The apparent beauty may decay, but the Source of true beauty is not subject to decay.</p>
<p>The recipe for painless love, then, is to direct our love away from transient things and toward the Eternal One, and to love everything else in His sake. The thirteenth-century Turkish mystic poet Yunus Emre expressed this paradigm concisely in his poem: &#8220;We love the creation because of the Creator.&#8221;</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In this world, many kinds and colours and varieties of beauty are exhibited. Looking closely, we see that all things, and in particular all living beings, are in a movement to satisfy their recurrent needs and wishes; we see that whatever they need and desire reaches them in unexpected ways at most proper times and from places which it is impossible for themselves to reach.</p>
<p>For example, the cells of a body are supplied with the sustenance they need without willful questing; the young of living creatures are nourished with an extraordinarily wonderful food first in their mothers’ wombs and then after their birth. It is impossible for either to obtain the least of their needs through their own power and faculties. Consider your own case: with respect to your inner and external senses and organs, what innumerable needs you have, none of which you can provide by yourself although they are indispensable to your life.</p>
<p>Who created the sun and hung it above you as a source of light and colour and warmth? Can you give existence to a single flower, which you need to satisfy your sense of smell? Do you have any part in the creation of a single molecule of air, which is so vital for you? Who established the relation between your body and senses and the world around you? You see that human intervention in the natural world can destroy the ecological balance in it so as to make it lethal to you, even though human beings are the most conscious and knowledgeable of creatures.</p>
<p>Have you ever pondered how much a single apple really costs? For an apple to come into being is it not absolutely necessary to have the harmonious and justly proportioned collaboration of the sun (the source of heat and light), of the air, of moisture, of soil, with the seed of the apple tree? Seeing that you-even though you are one of the most powerful and knowledgeable of creatures-are unable to create even a particle of earth, a molecule of air, a beam of light and a tiny seed, do you not also see, and see clearly, that concepts like chance, necessity or ‘natural causes’, to which people import creativity, although these are altogether lacking in consciousness or power or knowledge or free will, cannot really be the originators of those things?</p>
<p>Also, you see that everything is interconnected to everything in the universe; all things are interrelated to a single thing, which is, in turn, interrelated to all things. The whole of the universe needs every single part of it for its existence; the deformation of a single cell in your body can lead to the death of the whole body. So, are all of these factors not enough to explain the existence and Unity of One, Who is absolutely Knowledgeable and absolutely Powerful. Who created the whole of the universe, as well as each tiny particle in it? Who created each single cell of our body, as well as the whole of it?</p>
<p>Thus, the provision of your needs and the needs of all creature indicates a most Compassionate, All-Generous and Sustaining One, Who directs each thing to a final point of perfection particular to itself. How else can you explain all these acts, each and all fully realized, of innumerable purposive consequences within an infinite compassion and miraculous orderliness? Is your need to understand satisfied by appeals to blind and deaf nature, to unconscious forces, aimless chance, lifeless causes?</p>
