										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Do you know how a steel blade can float on the water? Or how can some insects stride on a pond? How do your contact lenses stay in position on your eyes? And how does water reach the higher parts of plants?</p>
<p><span id="more-1592"></span></p>
<p>While wandering near a creek, have you ever seen bugs walking on the surface of the water? Have you felt any resistance when you hit the surface of the sea with your palm? Have you ever thought about what causes these to happen?</p>
<p>The two examples of events given above happen to be related to &#8220;surface tension.&#8221; This situation is described as the force per distance unit that is generated in the opposite direction of the direction of expansion between two different surfaces. It can take place in between two different liquid layers, as well as among liquid-gas and liquid-solid layers. For example, the surface tension of a liquid forms in the transitional region where liquid and gas molecules make contact. The source of this force generated on the liquid&#8217;s surface is the intermolecular attractions that hold the liquid molecules together. Each molecule in the liquid is pulled via opposite but equal forces by neighboring molecules, thus no single force is acting on the molecules. However, the molecules on the surface are only surrounded by one side, therefore they are pulled inwards with a net force (Figure 1), causing a tension similar to an inflated balloon on the surface of the liquid.</p>
<p>When we look carefully to a stagnant pool of water in a container, the surface of the water seems to be covered with a thin layer of film, resembling a stretched membrane. In order for a substance to enter or leave the body of water successfully, it must puncture this membrane. In other words it has to overcome this intermolecular force. If a steel blade is laid horizontally on the surface of the water slowly, it floats despite that it is made of denser steel because it cannot overcome this surface tension. Surface tension is the principle responsible for the trampoline-like behavior of liquid surfaces. Many insect species created for aqueous habitats can maintain their lives on the water via their adapted leg parts. The best example of this is the water strider. This insect lives on water by taking advantage of water surface tension. Though the surface tension principle is a requirement to be on the water, it is also necessary that the strider not to stick to the surface. Therefore, this insect is also equipped with a paddle made of waxy hairs at the end of their legs (Figure 2).</p>
<h3>Forces of cohesion and adhesion</h3>
<p>The intermolecular force of a liquid among the same kind of molecules is called the &#8220;cohesion force,&#8221; and intermolecular attraction between different types of liquid molecules is called the &#8220;adhesion force.&#8221; These forces of adhesion and cohesion determine the behavior of a liquid in a container. If some mercury is put in a glass tube, because the cohesive forces among the mercury atoms is greater than the adhesive forces in between the glass container and the mercury, the mercury assumes a convex shape. Here, mercury has a tendency to reduce its contact with the glass and does not wet it. In contrast to mercury, when water is put inside the tube, the surface layer between the water and air takes an inward concave shape. This is caused by the greater adhesion force between the water and glass compared to the intermolecular cohesion forces of water. Water wets the glass since it has a tendency to spread towards the greatest surface possible (Figure 3).</p>
<p>When there is a thin layer of water or tea left in between a tea glass and its plate, the adhesion force glues the glass and plate together. Since the adhesion force is greater than the weight of the plate, the glass cup can be lifted together with the plate. Contact lenses also stay in position on the eyes without falling through the help of adhesion forces. Tears strongly pull both cornea and the contact lens together, holding it in place.</p>
<h3>The capillary effect</h3>
<p>A liquid inside a thin vertical tube is pulled upwards by the inner surface of the tube until the adhesion force becomes balanced with the liquid weight. This event is called the capillary effect or capillarity. Liquids naturally rise in narrow channels if there is sufficient adhesion force. This effect is enhanced in narrow tubes due to the smaller volume of the liquid, but reduced in wider tubes because of gravity. Therefore, there is an inverse ratio between the channel diameter and liquid height in capillarity.</p>
<p>The reason a sponge absorbs water effectively is the easy rise of water in the capillary openings of the sponge. In a similar fashion, there are small openings found in paper napkins and towels. When a napkin makes contact with a wet surface, water is pulled inside the small openings with capillary action, thus removing the water from the surface. This is because the adhesion force in between the napkin tissue and water is greater than the cohesion force of the water molecules. This principle is also utilized while getting blood samples with capillary tubes. In addition, the removal of continuously excreted tears by the capillary ocular ducts that extend into the nasal cavity is another example of this wise law.</p>
<p>Capillary action is also important for the transportation of water molecules from humid parts towards drier areas in soil, providing for the spread of water. The same principle is also vital to nourishment of trees. Every part of a tree encompasses capillary channels, all the way from the tips of the roots to very ends of the branches. Water molecules are transported to the leaves against gravity when they enter the tips of these capillary channels at the roots. Even though the adhesion forces between the water molecules and the root&#8217;s tissues win the war against gravity, at a certain height, this force becomes equal to the gravitational pull, thus not allowing water molecules to climb higher. This is the ultimate height a tree reaches. Capillarity also affects internal water pressure of a tree, leaf size, photosynthesis, and other factors. This is why the leaves of a tree are usually bigger on lower branches compared to higher ones (Figure 4).</p>
<p>The surface tension of water is the highest among the known values of other liquids and this has very significant biological effects. If the surface tension of water was to be lower, like other liquids, it would not be able reach the higher parts of plants through capillary action, thus preventing the survival of taller plants. The vegetation waits patiently as nourishment is delivered to its roots. Water has been assigned a vital role in this service.</p>
<p>The water-dependent survival of plants is made possible through the capillarity and surface tension. Could this amazing phenomenon, in which the capillarity is on duty to water the leaves on the highest branches of the tallest trees to ensure the maintenance of life, take place via blind atomic interactions or accidental occurrences?</p>
<h3>How do liquid droplets get their shape?</h3>
<p>Objects with a wider surface will have a greater surface tension. Since the force of surface tension, acting on per unit distance, is equal to the surface energy per surface area, a wider surface requires greater accumulation of energy on the surface. All the matter in the universe tends to stay at a lowered energy level. Therefore, it is ideal for objects to reduce their surface area. When the surface area to volume ratio of the known geometric shapes is investigated, the smallest ratio is found to belong to a sphere. A small value of this ratio means the most reduced surface area per volume. Among enclosed containers of equal volume, a sphere is also the one with the smallest surface area. When two equal volume watermelons of spherical and cubical shape are peeled, the spherical one will produce the least amount of rinds.</p>
<p>Because of the reasons mentioned above, liquids take a droplet shape immediately when they fall, reducing their surface area. That is why a water droplet dripping from a faucet, a falling rain drop, and a droplet on a leaf are all in the shape of a sphere (Figure 5). It is the same principle that makes planets and other heavenly bodies resemble a globular form. This indeed points to an Almighty Power who plans the motions, positions, and assignments of all the objects, from particles to giants, managing and dispatching them as The Self-Existent One holding everything together.</p>
<h3>Factors affecting surface tension</h3>
<p>Temperature increase is directly proportional to a decrease in the surface tension in most liquids. When the temperature of a liquid rises, so does the kinetic energy of the particles in it, making these particles move faster. This leads to a weakened intermolecular attraction that binds molecules together. Since this change affects the particles at the surface, it decreases the tension. Improved soaking of hands and laundry can be achieved with warm water during cleaning because heat reduces the surface tension. This helps with better cleaning results in a shorter amount of time.</p>
<p>In a similar fashion, soap and detergents also reduce the surface tension of water. If a small soap bubble is placed on a water droplet, the droplet spreads away instantly. This indeed tells us that the soap bubble reduces surface tension.</p>
<p>If a substance dissolves in a pure material, surface tension is found to change depending on the solute and the solvent structure. For example, salt decreases the surface tension of water. Salt weakens the intermolecular bonds of the water molecules, and therefore reduces the cohesion and surface tension. That&#8217;s why sea waves foam when they hit shore.</p>
<p>Can surface tension be associated with the ability of unconscious and primitive atoms as the principle behind many functions and tasks in the lives of plants and animals? Do such wondrous events happen by chance? Isn&#8217;t this principle such a blessing of the One who easily provides what is necessary to all living things, nourishing them in time according to their needs?</p>

<p>And the earth, We have spread it out like a couch; and how excellent We are in spreading it. (Adh-Dhariyah, 51:48)</p>
<p>The factory of the universe and the guesthouse of the earth are so pure and clean and so untainted and fresh that … if … the act of cleansing is not attributed to the Creator of the universe, then … [e]ither all the creatures would have a share in the universal act of cleansing… or there would have to be a consultative committee the size of the universe in order to decide and regulate all those acts together… This is impossible not just once, but hundreds and thousands of times over. (4)</p>
<p>Have you ever come across a “stinky forest”? How about a “messy desert”? These questions are primarily posed as rhetoric since various means of sanitation is ubiquitous in nature (Stinky forests and lakes actually exist only thanks to pollution—a modern problem introduced by human intervention via misconduct of technology) where Lotus Effect is only one of the mechanisms contributing to the steady “house-keeping” in nature.</p>
<p>In muddy waters, the lotus plant stands out with its ever-clean leaves making it a symbol of purity in Asian cultures. Moreover, lotus leaves keep dry under even the heaviest monsoon rain. Such seemingly ironical feats are accomplished by capitalizing on a principle named after the plant itself: The Lotus Effect.</p>
<h3>The Lotus Effect</h3>
<p>At first sight, the cleansing of the leaves by the rainfall seems utterly trivial. However, the cleaning of the lotus plant (Nelumbo nucifera) by the downpour is not something to be taken for granted. Curiously, when raindrops encounter the lotus leaf, they adopt an almost perfectly spherical shape, resembling ball bearings, and start rolling off the surface carrying away all the dirt (Figure 1). Easier said than done, the lotus plant always keeps pristine, even at the microscopic level.</p>
<p>In the early 1970s, soon after the electron microscope (which can yield vivid images of the ultra small details that are at length scales on the order of a billionth of a meter) became commercially available, German botanist Wilhelm Barthlott (of University of Bonn, Germany) started imaging plants using the newly discovered technology. Sample preparations for electron microscopy normally demanded tedious cleaning procedures since even a speckle of dust could ruin the portrayed landscape at such minuscule scales. To Barthlott’s surprise, some plants apparently were “self-cleaning”: They required very little (or sometimes none whatsoever) cleaning for detailed inspection with the microscope and the lotus plant was a prince of these (1). Further intrigued by the fact, Barthlott looked at the lotus leaves through the electron microscope to find out what renders the lotus plant remarkably competent to repel even the tiniest dirt.</p>
<h3>Water’s love-hate affair</h3>
<p>Before delving into the secrets for lotus plant’s sanitation, let’s look at the interaction of water with other materials. At the molecular level, the electrical charges are unevenly distributed across a water molecule (i.e. water is highly “polar”) which becomes entangled in a love-hate type of relationship with other materials: Some materials “love” water tending to maximize their interaction with it, whereas others “hate” it, trying to avoid their encounter with water as much as possible.1 To put things in perspective, we can immediately tell from everyday experience that oil is “water-hating” since oil and water do not mix, while sugar is “water-loving” because sugar can dissolve in water without much effort.</p>
<p>Macroscopically—that is, one can immediately realize by touching a lotus leaf—the lotus leaf surface feels waxy, and should therefore be water-hating. However, the waxiness is not enough to equip the lotus plant with its unusual capabilities to remain clean since the lotus leaf is not alone among plants in its leaves’ surface waxiness. Indeed, there is more to the lotus leaf’s curious surface properties than that, a property which was first recognized by Barthlott under the electron microscope.</p>
<h3>Super water-hating surfaces</h3>
<p>When Barthlott looked at the lotus leaf, besides its spotlessness in the microscopic sense, the leaf surface was decorated with numerous bumps a few micron sizes each (a micron is one millionth of a meter). Such bumpiness served to enhance the water-hating aspect of the surface making it “super water-hating,” corresponding to a contact angle that is close to 170 degrees. As a result, water encountering the lotus leaf surface rapidly beads up forming a nearly spherical shape (akin to the scenario when one drips water on a hot cooking pan) and drops roll off the surface even with an ever-so-slight inclination of the leaf. Apparently, a rolling water droplet is much more effective in picking up the surface dirt than one that is merely sliding, and all the surface debris is thus wiped off.</p>
<p>Although discovered first in the lotus plant, the super water-hating surfaces are serving a passive yet effective means of cleaning for animals like butterflies, dragonflies and other insects that are not able to clean all their body parts actively. For plants, preventing the coverage of their leaves by water (or other contaminants) is important to maximize the exposure to sunlight which would otherwise cause reduced photosynthesis. Another great biological relevance of surfaces of such nature for all these creatures is that it provides protection against the growth of pathogens by keeping the surface dry at all times.</p>
<h3>Inspirations from biology for technology</h3>
<p>There are ever-growing biologically inspired technologies, so-called biomimetics, and the lotus effect provides a nifty example. Unfolding the mystery behind lotus’ exceptional competence in self-cleaning, Barthlott patented the idea of artificially manufacturing microscopically-raised, water-repelling surfaces to mimic the lotus leaf. “Lotus Effect” is now a registered trademark which underlies commercial products such as self-cleaning windows and fabrics, as well as a dirt-repelling paint. Other applications that are waiting around the corner are: swimsuits that stay dry for days allowing prolonged underwater excursions, coatings on metals to avoid the deposits of marine bioorganisms which would enable up to 40% reduction on fuel consumption by decreasing friction (2). Metal coatings will also find applications to prevent ice formation on plane engines alleviating their wear-and-tear (3).</p>
<p>Apparently, lotus does not collect dirt, but only patents.</p>
<h3><b>Note</b></h3>
<p>1 Contact angle is a metric for the water propensity of a surface. Water drop displays a higher contact angle (hence lower contact area) on a water-hating surface when compared to a lower contact angle (hence higher contact area) on a water-loving one.</p>

<p>The skin, which covers a total surface area of approximately 1.65 m2 and which weighs in total about 9.5 kg, is surely the largest and the heaviest organ of the human body; yet its miraculous functions are still a puzzle to us.</p>
<h3><b>A layered structure</b></h3>
<p>The human skin is composed of three layers: the epidermis (outermost layer), the dermis (vascular connective tissue below the epidermis) and the hypodermis (the deepest portion of the skin), each of which has a very complex metabolism of its own. Each of the structures of which the skin is comprised has a wide variety of functions; all of these functions must be in order if we are to maintain our good health. In particular the epidermis and the dermis each have their own distinct functions, but also share some duties, and all of these are essential for the survival of the human. The thickness of the skin varies from 8 mm on the palms and soles of the feet to nearly less than 1 mm on the eyelids. Within the epidermis are found four difÂ¬ferent types of cells that undertake different tasks; the appearance of our skin, in terms of texture, evenness of color, hydration, and overall youthfulness and constitutional health, is greatly dependent on the interaction of these cellular functions.</p>
<h3><b>A single organ with several functions</b></h3>
<p>It is very interesting that the majority of people are not aware of the fact that the skin is one organ.</p>
<p>Not only does it cover the body, our skin performs many amazing tasks such as,</p>
<p>-helping with water conservation,</p>
<p>-helping with the maintenance of body temperature,</p>
<p>-perception of touch</p>
<p>-providing a barrier to harmful germs,</p>
<p>-storing fat,</p>
<p>-storing vitamin D,</p>
<p>-acting as a mechanical barrier against knocks or bumps,</p>
<p>-helping in the removal of the waste products of metabolism</p>
<p>-providing protection against environmental influences, such as cold or high temperatures, and destructive ultraviolet rays, as well.</p>
<p>It is common knowledge that the major task of our skin is to protect the human body from harmful environmental factors. It is, indisputable that the fundamental purpose of the skin is to provide a flexible, protective shield between us and the outside world. This is made possible by the layers of flattened epithelial cells which hinder micro-organisms and chemicals from entering the body.</p>
<h3><b>Constant replacement</b></h3>
<p>The benefits we have mentioned would not last long, however, if skin cells were not renewed. This amazing regeneration process happens through a replacement operation that is dependent on a continuous cell division in the basal layer. As the cells move towards the outer surface they lose their softness. Consequently, they gradually die off and stiffen. Dead cells are constantly sloughed off from the upper surface of the epidermis and are continuously shed; they are replaced by new cells that are generated in the deeper layers. This process is often referred to as “cellular renewal.” As cells progress through the various stages, they finally stiffen and die or keratinize. This dead cell layer, or keratinocytes, makes up the outermost layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum. These hardened and cornified cells are designed by our Creator to act as a protective barrier; otherwise, living cells would not be able to provide the protective qualities necessary to isolate the living tissue from exposure to possible detrimental substances and organisms. The living epidermal cells die by an extremely sophisticated process, displaying a voluntary self-sacrifice that enables humans survive, an evident blessing from our Most Gracious Lord.</p>
<h3><b>Regulation of body temperature</b></h3>
<p>The regulation of temperature is considered to be one of the major duties given to the skin. We naturally lose water through constant evaporation throughout our lives. It is of utmost importance that the loss of too much body fluid is prevented. By narrowing or widening the capillary blood vessels and also by means of numerous sweat glands, evaporation on the surface enables our skin to become cooler or warmer, in a strictly limited range of temperatures. The fat cells of the skin prevent losing too much heat, and when the body overheats, the skin’s extensive small blood vessels carry warm blood to the surface where it is cooled. So, as we can deduce from this, the main task of the skin is to prevent the loss of body fluids through evaporation.</p>
<p>Another task of the skin is the storing of fat and the production of vitamin D [25-dihydroxycholecalciferol]. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is found in food and can also be processed in our body after exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. Sunshine is a significant source of vitamin D because the UV rays from the sun stimulate the synthesis of vitamin D in the skin. This fundamental feature of our skin is, clearly, indispensable to our skeletal development.</p>
<h3><b>The witness</b></h3>
<p>The human skin has also a function in sense communication with the environment. It gathers sensory information from the environment; this is performed by means of a great number of receptors (for example, those for warmth and cold) and intraepithelial nerve endings. Nerve cells in the skin form the body’s first contact with the outer world. At the moment of birth, an infant’s first experiences of the physical world are perceived through the sense of touch. Nerve cells allow the skin to receive and transmit signals from touch, pain, tickling, etc. As the skin is the boundary between a living creature and the world around it, it is also the physical interface between the creature and other creatures and the world. Hence it is the location of all contact, good or bad in kind. The Qur’an declares that the skin will also testify when we are called to account on the Day of Judgment:</p>
<p>Until when they reach it, their ears, and their eyes, and their skins will bear witness against them as to all that they did habitually. They will ask their skins, “Why have you borne witness against us?” They will answer: “God Who makes everything speak has made us speak.” It is He Who has created you in the first instance, and to Him you are being brought back. You did not seek to veil yourselves (when sinning) without ever considering that your ears or your eyes or your skins would one day bear witness against you. (Fussilat 41:21-22)</p>
<p>As pointed out in the verse …the abode of the Hereafter is truly alive (29:64), everything in the Abode of Hereafter will be alive. So, like every part of a human being, the skin will bear witness for or against them. The verse implies that it is the medium where all our contact is recorded and it will be an ideal witness.</p>
<h3><b>Wounds and healing</b></h3>
<p>Another astounding mission of our skin is its role in healing wounds. The human skin has remarkable selfhealing properties, which obviously point to an intelligent design. A skin wound heals from the bottom up and from the edges inward. In the first stages of healing, the basic connective tissue of the skin moves into the injured area. The depth of the wound determines how well it will heal; the regeneration process begins immediately, but we still do not know what the trigger is. As a wound heals, the edges are drawn together by a process called contracture. The most amazing part of this phenomenon are the later stages of healing. It is as if all the cells are fully aware when and where to end the repair. Nobody knows why they abruptly stop working and how they finalize restoration.</p>
<h3><b>A shield against germs</b></h3>
<p>Our skin also serves us by organizing and activating the immune system. Some specific cells, which form a network in the epidermis or in the outer layer of skin, play an important part in this activity, by regulating the immune response to germs. As a major contributor to the body’s immune system, constituting the first line of de fense in keeping out bacteria, viruses, and other organisms that invade the body, the skin is home to enormous quantities of T-lymphocytes, or T-cells. Those domestic defense soldiers attack and destroy bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites, toxins, and cancerous cells that can cause disease. Thus, the skin is both a watertight barrier surrounding and protecting our body from a number of external assaults, never letting the undesired pathogenic germs penetrate.</p>
<p>Our Almighty and Everlasting Creator has granted us this gift of skin. He knows what those who are in need are in need of, and it is obvious that He is aware of the need of our cells, our organs, and our living metabolism, thus He has given the most favorable structural design to the human body. Just before we pray to Him, we should remember that the more consistent our demands, the more bountiful He will ordain. Frankly, there seems to be no way to explain the miracle of skin other than attributing it to the All- Beneficent God.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>George Eastman, the founder of the Kodak Company, took close-up photographs of wild animals in Africa with a simple camera in 1935, which he then showed to his friends. Surprised at seeing how close he had been able to take them, one of his friends asked “How did you manage this?” Eastman replied: “I had a hunter whom I trusted with me. I drew an imaginary line, roughly ten meters away from me. Then I told the hunter to shoot immediately any animal that attempted to cross that line while I was taking photographs.” They were all surprised and asked at the same time: “How did you dare take such a risk! What if the hunter had missed?” He replied “My friends, if you want to be successful in life, you should learn to trust the people with whom you work.”</p>
<p>In our daily lives, we come into contact with several different people. We trade or work together with some of these people, while with others we just exchange greetings or a few words. There are also some people with whom we share our troubles, worries, or joys. Life becomes sweeter and more meaningful with these people. People to whom we can open up our inner worlds tell us their sincere opinions about our good or bad sides. We realize our dreams and wishes; namely, we realize ourselves through them. And we can really be ourselves when we are with them. We experience friendship, brotherhood (or sisterhood), and we share our secrets with them. Real friendships are built over years as people get to know and try out one another, building up mutual trust. It is very difficult to maintain such good relationships through a lifetime without shaking the trust of the other person. When trust is shaken, the relationship collapses and shatters like glass, since the feeling of security is like a glue that adheres people together and improves relationships. Nothing can go right when there is no trust between spouses, children and parents, an employer and employees, directors and those who are directed, the state and its citizens, or between institutions. In such cases, people cannot fulfill their potential, they cannot present their positive feelings, cannot work efficiently, cannot try new things; relations become mechanical and life becomes robotic, blocking the ways that lead to both material and spiritual gain. Imagine a family with no feeling of trust between its members. Which member of that family can share their thoughts, joys, grief, or troubles with the rest? Such a family can only produce children deprived of love, and spouses weary of defending their interests.</p>
<p>On the other hand, a family which is made up of members who trust the others in opening up their ideals, ambitions, and their strong and weak sides will be the complete opposite, for the members of that family will feel confident that they will not be let down in return. Love, tolerance, and compassion prevail there. Sorrows, joys, and worries are all shared; everyone tries to realize their dreams and hopes.</p>
<p>How is a feeling of security maintained? Who do people trust? To whom can people entrust their property or life peacefully? Why isn’t everybody trustworthy? Are they not aware of the significance of trust in the family, in society, and in the business world; or do they choose not to be trustworthy? Or, perhaps, they don’t know how to be trustworthy.</p>
<p>Many things have been said about the importance of feelings of trust. Prophet Muhammad also stressed this fact, saying “The real believer is the person whom people are secure concerning their property and lives.” Then he underlined the six virtues of a trustworthy person as follows: “if you can make me promises concerning six things, I can assure Paradise to you. When you speak, speak the truth, fulfill what you have promised, be trustworthy with what has been entrusted to you, be chaste, protect your eyes from the unlawful, and keep your hands from harming others.” When we think about this on the whole, we are able to see that the people who have these qualities are trustworthy people. If a person has noble qualities, such as modesty, loyalty, tolerance, righteousness, courage, patience, vigor, and frankness, that person inspires trust in those around them. However, it is not enough to have such a character if a person is to establish a good dialogue with others. If we are to express ourselves confidently and overcome the difficulties we face in life, we need to have the ability to develop dialogue and good relations with other people.</p>
<h3><b>Open Communication Leads to Trust</b></h3>
<p>People need to feel secure in opening up their feelings and thoughts to others, so that they are able to establish a good relationship. Expressing ourselves freely, opening up to somebody else, is in direct proportion with the degree of sincerity and trust between that person and ourselves. Undoubtedly, we cannot simply open up to everyone we meet. Opening up means finding somebody we can trust. It takes time for one person to trust another. The person who is able to open up inspires trust in the other and receives the message “I trust you” in return. The trusted person opens up further and this leads to a deeper and closer relationship. When a person is reserved, on the other hand, then they initiate a vicious circle which makes the other party suppress their feelings. Surely, open communication is not possible at all times. There are also risks in open communication, but it is not healthy to be totally introverted all the time. If a person becomes too introverted, then they will suffer terrible loneliness. Open communication should not be expected from the other person at all times, and it should not be dependent on the initiation of open communication by the other party. One must take a risk in order to be open; almost all achievements in life are based on taking risks, to a lesser or greater degree. If we are open with the person with whom we are communicating, if we can trust and appreciate them, then they will also respond in the same manner, be open to us, and appreciate us. The steps we take in order to learn the truth, to improve ourselves, and to realize our thoughts are dependent on accepting the risk of being open.</p>
<p>Open communication is not only important in family relationships or friendships; it has a fundamental role in working relationships in both the private and public sectors in order to build up trust. A good leader knows that a small group cannot find the right solution to everything. They keep in mind that not only the executive board, but other employees may also have valuable knowledge, and that these “lesser beings” are no less intelligent than their “superiors.” Therefore, a good leader tries to keep in contact with the information potential at the ground level. The aim of a good leader is not only to teach others what to do, but also to ask how they can be of help and to comprehend what happens in practice. A leader does not decide everything behind closed doors. Instead, they clearly express their targets, anxieties, and needs, maintaining the flow of information from the bottom through to the top by establishing healthy communication. In this way people can see that their efforts are appreciated and they feel better. Who doesn’t want to be appreciated? Who doesn’t want to be listened to, cared about, and valued? How can a leader who does not maintain open communication with those at the ground level, who does not make people feel that they are important and that their ideas are valued gain their full support? People trust and do not want to disappoint leaders and managers who value them.</p>
<p>In Turkey, in the city of Diyarbakir, when the city’s Chief Commissioner of Police died, the funeral was held at the Governors Mansion. Tens of thousands of people from all over the city filled the street early in the morning. They were truly mourning the late Commissioner; it was as if they had lost a close relative. But what had made them love him so much? How had he managed to conquer the people’s hearts? In one of his interviews, he essentially answered this question: “We have established individual contact with our citizens; we have actively participated in their social activities and even their sports.” He continued as follows “I listen to everybody, I talk to everybody. I visit any grocer; if he’s busy I go on to the next. The sincere hospitality shown by an ordinary shop owner is one of the best feelings. In short, I am together with my people. When I was given this duty, they told me to protect the lives and properties of the people; this is my responsibility. Being the Chief Commissioner does not make me different, all of us are humans. We cannot act as we choose. People need to be loved, people need to be respected. If people respect me and I respect them, there isn’t much more to do. This is what people look for in this city.”</p>
<p>Here is the secret of maintaining trust: being close to people, making individual contact, not seeing one’s rank as a privilege, and not looking down on anybody. The Chief Commissioner saw himself as an ordinary man in society, and approached everybody with the same love, respect, affection, and sincerity, no matter what their age, sex, or ethnic background. One cannot help but remember the wise words of Ali ibn Abi Talib “Be a(n ordinary) person among people.” It makes no difference if one is a state official, or a company executive, or just a volunteer who wants to win people’s hearts; you will fail if you do not follow this principle. An absence of trust prevents us from realizing our goals effectively. When we manage to maintain trust however, people just flow toward the common goal spontaneously, like a river which has found its bed. This will be the time when you have attained real success.</p>
<h3><b>Sharing Your Thoughts and Work Increases Trust</b></h3>
<p>Keeping close contact with people is the type of behavior that builds up trust. Some administrators even adopt the principle of not making friends with the staff. They just get entangled with the pomp and prestige of their position, overlooking their own mistakes. Those who are open and realistic on the other hand, receive the same attitude from the people who work under their command.</p>
<h3><b>Listen to Yourself and to Others</b></h3>
<p>A person who knows how to listen can solve most matters easily. Someone who has the patience to listen to people can initiate a better dialogue with people through this ability. While listening, they can learn more, understand new points, and attain a deeper comprehension by seeing different aspects of issues; they can then put forward new solutions.</p>
<p>Listening to oneself leads a person to a deeper comprehension of themselves. If we learn to listen to our different moods and feelings, then we can get to know ourselves better. We realize our strong and weak sides. Someone who knows who they are and what one is experiencing is able to understand others more easily, and is able to look at things from their point of view, thanks to the broader perspective they have attained by listening to themselves. Listening makes people feel that they have been given importance. Not only does it show that you are interested in the person in front of you, but listening to someone helps you to predict that person’s disappointments before it is too late and helps you to prevent them.</p>
<p>Try to sense what people feel. Try to understand how fragile relationships are and the importance they bear for people. Know how difficult it is to establish these relationships and how easily they are damaged. Listen to both yourself, and those around you.</p>
<h3><b>Be Predictable</b></h3>
<p>Being consistent and predictable in a complex world helps the people around you to feel secure. Those who feel that the ground under their feet is firm can be open to new ideas and are not discouraged from taking risks. If they know that you do not change your attitude every day, they will feel that they can trust you. Predictability means being the same person all the time, so that people can predict how you will respond. Do not be afraid of telling the truth. Always give the same message; make yourself clear about what you expect from people. The trust you are to inspire will be the best help you can offer them.</p>
