<p>The scene of a quiet child tapping away at a phone or tablet with glee is an image that, by now, most people are familiar with. It may seem cute at first, however a sinister reality lurks beneath this scenario. Overwhelming research now shows that excessive cell phone usage in infants and adolescents can slow down, or even permanently alter, various parts of their extremely sensitive and still growing brains. Social skills, cognitive abilities, and emotional awareness can all be affected. This technology is often incredibly addicting because of its constant bombardment of lights, colors, and rewarding sounds that can thus inhibit a child’s ability to focus, learn how to properly socialize with other humans, and develop an interest in other activities. We as a society should be more aware of the effects that our phones have on our children so that we do not end up altering the biology of an entire generation. It should be our utmost goal as a society that we stay technologically literate so that we make our technology supplement our lives and work for us as opposed to being dependent on it to survive.</p>
<h3>How much time is too much time?</h3>
<p>Smart phones have positive benefits for children when used in small amounts, however there are dangerous consequences if their usage is excessive and left unchecked. For the sake of clarity, “excessive phone usage” will refer to the American Academy of Pediatric’s (AAP) 2018 suggested screen time limits.</p>
<p>“Avoid digital media for toddlers younger than 18 to 24 months other than video chatting. For children 18 to 24 months, watch digital media with them because they learn from watching and talking with you. Limit screen use for preschool children, ages 2 to 5, to just 1 hour a day of high-quality programming” [1].</p>
<h3>Cell phones can permanently stunt a child’s neural development</h3>
<p>Scientists have identified the first three years of a child’s life to be their “critical years,” a time when their brains are undergoing the most development and are the most sensitive to new information. It is imperative that children constantly interact with their parents via face to face communication, problem solving, and play in order to begin experiencing life while establishing the literal building blocks that will enable them to perceive and interact with the world around them for the rest of their lives. Children’s minds are akin to soft clay that can be easily molded, and both positive and negative experiences can have lasting effects on them. Excessive screen time can cause permanent damage to the brain and can inhibit “the ability to focus, to concentrate, to lend attention, to sense other people’s attitudes and communicate with them, (and) to build a large vocabulary….”</p>
<p>The short term, immediate gratification responses that phones constantly give usually train our brains to become addicted to always expecting quick responses from tasks that we engage in. This can make completing longer tasks that require more focus such as reading, paying attention in class, doing homework, or holding a conversation more difficult and can have lasting ramifications on a child’s performance in school and in social settings [2].</p>
<h3>Excessive usage can make children socially awkward and anxious</h3>
<p>As most teens and adults learn the hard way, the best way to grow socially is by directly engaging in the social behaviors that we often dread the most. Making new friends, talking to the opposite gender, and public speaking all become easier the more a person partakes in the activity despite how nerve-wracking they may initially be. This is especially true for children, who are socially clean slates that learn how to socialize by interacting with other children, their parents, and through play. Cell phone usage promotes a sedentary lifestyle, and a child can rarely grow socially by being sedentary. Playing with other kids teaches cooperation, empathy, and compassion. These are very human traits that cell phones cannot teach a child. Failing to develop strong social skills can lead to social anxiety, which has a host of its own problems, since a child may be ill-prepared to deal with social scenarios such as these ones.</p>
<p>The AAP recommends interacting with your child by asking them questions and encouraging a response while they use phones instead of just leaving them to their own devices. This way, they are interacting with their parents, as is necessary for their growth, and having the phone supplement their learning in the way that it is supposed to.</p>
<h3>Prolonged usage can easily lead to addiction and dependence</h3>
<p>Our brains have a built-in reward system that awards us when we achieve something of value. The chemical most commonly associated with this system, and most well-known by society, is dopamine. Normally, our brains receive dopamine in reasonable and completely safe doses as we go about our day whenever we feel we should be rewarded for something. This can include finishing an assignment, sending a difficult email to an even more difficult colleague, or when eating sweets. It makes us feel good and relaxed but can be addicting in large amounts. Cell phones can cause an overproduction of dopamine that has been compared, though to a lesser extent, to the excessive amount of dopamine produced as a result of abusing hard drugs, such as cocaine. Have you ever caught yourself reaching for your phone, without even thinking about it, as soon you hear a text message notification go off? That’s dopamine at work. It’s the rush that we get when something satisfactory happens, and it is all too easy to trigger with phones. Dopamine can easily become addictive, and the brain can become dependent on receiving a certain amount of dopamine every once in a while if it receives too much too quickly. This may be one reason why we may sometimes glance at our phones even if we know there is nothing new to look at.</p>
<p>In children whose brains are still developing, this dependence on dopamine can be catastrophic towards their growth. Their brains are much more susceptible to dopamine addictions than teens or adults are, though this is not to imply that older populations are safe. This is why a child may seem impossibly glued to a phone and will throw a tantrum once they are told to put it down. A proven method to help rid addictions, including cell phone addictions, is to replace the addictive behavior with a similar, healthier, but equally satisfying behavior. Phones can be replaced with Legos, or other interactive toys, in order to teach a child that there are ways to have fun besides phones. Going cold on an addiction rarely works as it does not sate the brain’s hunger for dopamine.</p>
<h3>It is entirely possible for us to regain control</h3>
<p>Fortunately, there are plenty of solutions that families can utilize in order to make sure that phones do not dominate their lives. Professional organizations such as the AAP and Mayo Clinic stress the importance of unstructured playtime for the minds of young children. In general, psychologists have realized that unstructured play is actually vital for the growth of children’s brains since it encourages creativity, imagination, and problem solving. Their brains are encountering problems, and thus creating solutions that lead to growth and understanding, while they play. Cell phones, on the other hand, tend to do the work for them instead and do not allow the brain to learn. This is especially true for videos that tell children everything that they need to know and do not give them time to problem-solve on their own.</p>
<p>The AAP encourages parents to establish a Family Media Plan that clearly outlines when and where family members can use their technology. Parents may consider forbidding technology at certain places, such as the dinner table, or doing activities, such as weekly board game nights, without technology either in order to remove the barriers that technology so often puts between us. A strong family is one where all family members have firm trust, understanding, and respect in between one another. <h3>Technology is awesome when used properly and in reasonable amounts!</h3>
<p>Virtually every person can name at least one technological medium that brings them joy and can bring them closer to the people that they care about. For some, this may be gathering around the couch and watching a movie or TV show. Others may prefer interactive video games that can bring the family together and can promote bonding in ways similar to board games. The internet also possesses an infinite treasure trove of resources that can greatly enhance education and our general quality of life. This technology mainly becomes problematic once we fail to monitor it properly and allow it to spiral out of control. But in moderation and under control, these innovations are a series of mind-blowing inventions that dazzle the mind and can very much aid our personal and family goals.</p>
<h3>There are organizations out there that are constantly raising awareness and promoting online safety</h3>
<p>In recent years, parents have realized how destructive cell phones can be to their families and have decided to do something about it. “Wait Until 8<sup>th</sup>” is a grassroots movement that encourages parents across the country to take a pledge that they will not give their children a smart device until they are at least 8 years old. It was started by Brooke Shannon and a few other parents in Austin, Texas, and works to empower parents and communities about the dangers of cell phones for kids. <p>There is also a wealth of resources for parents that are concerned about their children’s online safety. The National Cyber Security Alliance, Project Safe Childhood, and National Center for Missing and Exploited Children all help spread awareness about internet safety and the consequences of careless internet surfing. It should be a goal of every parent to stay technologically literate and up to date about which websites their children are visiting and the apps that they use.</p>
<h3>Make technology work for you, as opposed to working for it</h3>
<p>Our world is changing faster than we can adapt to it, and smart phones are no exception. New technology always presents new challenges, especially when it can take so long to thoroughly research the effects that this technology can have on our minds and bodies. It is important to always stay technologically literate so that we may provide the best quality of life that we can for our families. Technology, above all else, is a double-edged sword.</p>

<p>The Coronavirus pandemic has swept the world in recent months and with it came a wave of panic, unease, and a need for courage. Humanity is collectively fighting for its health, a treasure that we sometimes take for granted. It is imperative that we constantly look to maintain our health through reviewing potentially harmful practices and working to discover new methods of cleanliness and purity. Many of our articles in this issue will explore the theme of health across the spectrum including bodily, psychological, spiritual, and moral health. We also discuss Coronavirus in detail in this issue’s Science Square and dispel some conspiracy theories that the virus is man-made. </p>
<p>Washing our hands regularly is actually one of the most simple and effective ways to help prevent the spread of viruses, including Covid-19. Such a simple procedure seems like common sense nowadays, but this process was actually a breakthrough in the nineteenth century. Consistent hand washing and sterilization is especially important for hospital staff as they can easily transmit new diseases and germs into patients with weakened immune systems. Taking responsibility for our individual health will contribute to the overall health of our society by at least not spreading disease. </p>
<p>Diabetes is another disease that threatens the well-being of millions across the globe. It is complicated, and we explore in this issue the differences that excessive fat and sugar consumption can have in regards to causing and accelerating diabetes. We can best preserve our health with reasonably sized diets that are rich in nutrients, and routines that physical exercise.  </p>
<p>The effects of selfishness versus selflessness on the mind are also explored. It is no secret that many current societies promote selfishness over the well-being of others whether through subliminal advertisement messaging or the consistent emphasis placed upon trampling over others for career success. The way that we view and treat others, whether positively or negatively, has a rippling effect throughout society and works to either bolster or deteriorate our collective mental health and happiness. </p>
<p>We must especially work hard to preserve the health of our children, from the food that they eat to the media and technology that they use. Cell phone usage among infants and toddlers is becoming more and more widespread, however studies have shown that excessive usage can stunt their growth or even permanently alter their very fragile and rapidly developing brains. </p>
<p>Our world is rapidly changing, as it seems that every year produces new innovations and challenges to keep up with. It is up to us to stay informed and aware, lest we fall behind and fail to preserve the very things that we hold most dear.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In 1881, F. Edgeworth defines the first principle of economics such that every agent is motivated only by self-interest. The idea of self-interest motivation is conceptualized with a hypothetical economic agent named as &#8220;homo-economicus&#8221; who behaves rationally and in accord with logical principles, thus seeks to maximize his/her own benefits. Even though the use of homo-economicus, or the &#8220;money-making animal&#8221; and &#8220;money-hungry monomaniac&#8221; in the words of John Kells Ingram, as a rational representative agent in economic modeling becomes the norm in economic studies, the presence of irrational and quasi-rational people in the society and the actuality of irrational behaviors (in economic sense) in rational people pose some question about the use of this constructed man to understand the people&#8217;s economic behaviors.</p>
<h3>Homo economicus</h3>
<p>Pioneered by Adam Smith, one of the founders of capitalism, the idea of homo-economicus is used as a base to construct theories on consumption and investment. In his famous book The Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith emphasizes the importance of self interest in human behaviors and describes the self-interest as the key driver of social prosperity. An economic agent has been constructed as a representative one which typifies the economic behavior of a typical person in the society and it is assumed that this agent systematically behaves rationally when deciding on any issue, especially the economic issues. If we define rationality, from the economics standpoint, as an act that aims for the maximum possible degree of acquirements with given limited resources, this constructed agent will be rational by behaving in favor of his/her own self-interest, hence he/she will always be optimizing.</p>
<h3>Are we really rational?</h3>
<p>In fact, the core belief in the idea of homo-economicus that homo-sapiens, the wise man, acts selfishly is a realistic assumption as self-interest is an important part of the innate human nature and an important intrinsic motive. We always want the best for ourselves and this motive is not exactly greed, but an intrinsic motivation to behave on one&#8217;s interest. But, it is also true that not everyone is rational in the society and not all behaviors are considered rational in an economic sense. To test whether the individuals make rational choices or not, Nobel Laureate Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky conducted numerous experiments to test the human rationality and they reached this conclusion that human behaviors are not as rational as predicted by the homo-economicus assumption, instead they found that depending on how the question is framed or how things are measured people can make different choices. Also, they observed that not all behaviors are utility maximizing, sometimes people act altruistically, and sometimes people have the tendency to stay in the status quo. An interesting result of their experiment is that, when people make decisions, they emotionally value losses twice as much as they value an equivalent gain. In an experiment, they ask the subjects the following question:</p>
<p>Would you accept this gamble?<br />&#8211; 50% chance to win $150<br />&#8211; 50% chance to lose $100</p>
<p>They realized that, even though the expected value of gain in the above gamble (50% x $150= $75) is higher than the expected value of loss (50% x $100= $50), there are fewer takers of the gamble. Instead of showing their other experiment results, we can easily look at some of the marketing tricks to have an idea about the irrational choices we make in our daily life. <br />In a marketing strategy called Decoy marketing, marketers observe a boost in their sales of an expensive offer when they offer a similar item that is inferior in quality but about the same price of the expensive item. In his book Predictably Irrational Don Areily conducts an experiment using magazine subscription offers where subjects were offered two alternative subscription choices to The Economist magazine, one print only subscription (the inferior option which serves to make the combined offer look like a better value) and one internet and print subscription and they observe huge jump in sales due to the decoying effect.</p>
<p>In another experiment in Predictably Irrational, the author shows that people would walk 15 minutes to save $7 on an $18 item but wouldn&#8217;t take the same 15-minute trip to save the same amount on a $455 item. In fact, it is the same amount of savings, and a rational person is expected to behave consistently at each case.</p>
<p>The current financial turmoil is a typical example for how people can make irrational decisions. Currently, the world is experiencing a catastrophic financial and economic meltdown started at the subprime mortgage markets in United States and spread out to other financial markets. Some people claim that the irrational behavior of sophisticated investors was the root cause of the recent meltdown. To get a better understanding of the issue, we need to look at the balance of greed and fear in the investors&#8217; behavior. While greed leads to overconfidence in the economy and excessive risk taking, the fear in the market leads to inactivity in the market and excessive aversion to risk. When investors make a decision about whether buying a stock, bond or any sophisticated security, they are expected to evaluate the expected reward versus the risk of possible expected loss. As predicted in Kahneman and Tversky study, the wisdom in the Wall Street is that &#8220;Fear always trumps greed.&#8221; Neuroscientists describe the situation when greed dominates the fear as a &#8220;moral meltdown,&#8221; and this is the situation where human brain loses control of reward and loss comparison and completely ignores risks. Take the trading in collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) which was perceived as one of major problems that leads to the recent financial crises. Since the security was rated excellent by the rating agencies and all losses were insured by AIG insurance company, the investors observed too much reward opportunities while no weight was given to the risk of a collapse in the market. That is the point when greed dominates fear in the market and fear fails to balance greed in the normal investor&#8217;s brain. In the aftermath of the financial collapse, what we see right now is just the opposite of what was the case in the buildup of the financial bubble. Now, both investors and bankers are in a mode of excessive fear where negative news significantly decrease the stock prices and instead of providing credit to the markets, investors sit on a huge pile of cash.</p>
<p>If the excessive greed and overconfidence in the economy results in catastrophic events, should we ask investors to be less greedy? According to the Adam Smith, all humans have sympathy for the rich and famous. We can even find this in Holy Scriptures as well. There is always a sympathy for, and envy of, the rich. Hence, asking people to act against their innate nature may not be a wise decision but we should also keep in mind that this inherent human tendency can lead to moral corruption in the society. What we need is the balance of fear and greed in our behaviors and if one dominates the other, there will be misery for the whole. </p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Everything-from the size of raindrops to the height of trees, the speed of wind and the food chain produced in the ocean-is controlled within a magnificent balance. However, due to the unlimited demands of humans, the earth&#8217;s ecosystem is subjected to immense changes and is gradually being destroyed. Some of the main reasons for this destruction are the fertilizers used in agriculture which contain excessive chemicals, insecticides, and detergents used in the home. These substances are carried into streams, lakes, and the oceans by rainfall, wastewater, and through irrigation, causing pollution. The deterioration in the ecological chain caused by this pollution affects the ecosystem, and thus the human health. Phytoplankton, the productive organisms which are at the base of the food chain in aquatic ecosystems, are microscopic organisms that produce organic nutrients (sugar, protein etc.) through the process of photosynthesis. During the production stage of these nutrients, phytoplankton absorbs the contaminative and toxic elements. As the larger creatures (invertebrates and vertebrates such as fish) feed on phytoplankton, they, in turn, absorb the toxins accumulated in the phytoplankton.</p>
<p>The phosphate and nitrogen compounds found in the waste material that are released into the environment go through some biological processes and are transformed into nourishing salts for the phytoplankton. When there is an increase in temperature, these salts may cause some of the phytoplankton to grow and reproduce excessively. The toxic materials released by some, and the use of excessive oxygen, are harmful to other organisms.</p>
<p>Another example of pollution is related with algae. When the number of microbial plants called algae reaches one million per cubic decimeter (1 million/dm3) of water, the consumption of oxygen required in order to mineralize, and break-down the organic materials found in the water increases, and therefore a compound of toxins which pollute the water, such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), are released. This pollution can cause the death of fish and other organisms which live in the water. As a result of the reduction in water quality, an increase in the type of algae called cyanobacteria occurs and the biotoxins that they produce threatens human health.</p>
<p>More than forty types of algae produce various toxins. Some of these toxins damage the human liver, some attack the nervous system (particularly the brain), some can cause allergic skin reactions, and some can even induce cancer. The release of domestic, industrial, and agricultural waste and the high percentage of nutrients (such as nitrogen and phosphor compounds) into the aquatic ecosystem can cause an excessive increase of algae in the waters. This algal bloom in fresh water is referred to as eutrophication. In oceans, it is referred to as red tide because the water appears to be a reddish color. Both present a significant environmental problem.</p>
<p>In low doses humans are exposed to these toxins by the consumption of drinking water. In Brazil in 1988, almost 2000 people developed gastroenteritis over a forty day period due to the consumption of drinking water contaminated by these toxins, and eighty-eight of them died. In South Australia, as early as 1878, many sheep, horses, dogs and other animals died as a result of drinking water from Lake Alexandrina, which was covered by scum caused by an aglal bloom called Nodularia spumigena.</p>
<p>Mussels, a delicacy eaten and enjoyed by many, accumulate large amounts of toxins because they feed on phytoplankton. One study found that in fresh water mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) that fed on cyanobacteria, almost 10.7 g toxins per gram of bodyweight was accumulated. This is also the case in marine mussels. It has been determined that these toxins in gradually increased concentrations are passed onto organisms higher on the food chain by consumption. Accordingly, we should always consider the potential risk factors before consuming shellfish.</p>
<p>Biotoxins are released into the water after being broken down by algae. Thus, when an algal bloom reaches high levels, there is an increase in the density of toxins in the water. As these toxins dissolve in the water, purifying the contaminated water requires not only expensive, but also advanced technology methods. Unfortunately, it is impossible to remove this waste in many of the existing refining plants. The toxin concentration in drinking and utility water should be reduced in regions where drinking water is obtained from lakes by mixing it with uncontaminated water, particularly during the spring when the algal bloom occurs. Thus, reducing the amount of biotoxins in the water to a level that will cause minimal harm to aquatic organisms should help to reduce the risks to humans.</p>
<p>Many types of waste released into the environment cause damage, which adversely affect humans. Polluting the environment may be easy, but purifying the environment of this pollution is a very difficult task. Indeed, humans were not created to act irresponsibly and destroy the universe in which they are mere guests. On the contrary, the human is a delicate guest with sublime duties. Protecting the natural resources provided for our needs and utilizing these resources in the most productive manner, without disturbing the balance of nature, is a duty of every human on earth.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hypertension occurs when the force of blood in the veins rises higher than the normal level. So what are the blood pressure levels that indicate we may be suffering from hypertension? If the blood pressure level of a resting person is 140/90 mmHg or higher on two different occasions, this is classified as hypertension. The two numbers represent the systolic pressure, or the blood that is pumped into the body (140 mmHg), and the diastolic pressure, the blood that is pumped back to the heart (90 mmHg). If the blood pressure levels are kept within the normal limits, hypertension can be controlled. However, if hypertension is not treated, it can lead to serious conditions like cerebral hemorrhage, strokes, heart and kidney failure, loss of sight, and heart attacks.</p>

<h3 align="left"><b>The world hypertension statistics</b></h3>
<p>Almost a quarter (26 percent) of the world’s adult population suffers from high blood pressure. It is estimated that this number will reach 29 percent by the year 2025. These average statistics based on the adult population of the world includes people of various age groups and from different countries. The risk of hypertension increases with age. While the figure for 20–29 year old males is 13 percent, it increases to 40 percent between the ages of 50–59, and reaches over 60 percent after the age of seventy. Although there are slight variations in women, many of the figures are almost the same (Figure 1).</p>
<p>These figures are quite striking; one out of every two people over the age of sixty suffers from high blood pressure. As for those in their seventies, the figures have already reached almost 70 percent and are expected to increase even further as this group ages. Many diseases in the adult population remain at 1–2 percent; therefore, these figures convey just how common and serious hypertension really is.</p>
<h3><b>The regional distribution of hypertension figures</b></h3>
<p>In contrast with the estimated numbers given above, the figures for hypertension in the different regions present significant variations. Statistically, the number of hypertension cases increases according to the welfare status of the society. In economically developed countries, 37 percent of the adult population has high blood pressure, which is a considerably elevated number in comparison with the world average of 26 percent. Furthermore, 70 percent of the males and 80 percent of the females over the age of seventy living in economically developed countries suffer from high blood pressure. However, in economically underdeveloped countries, the number of hypertension cases is very low.</p>

<p>The hypertension rates in China and India are well below the world averages, with males at 17 percent and females at just 14 percent (Figure 2). In some societies, for example in the Amazon’s catchment areas, the Yanomami Red-Indians, and tribes in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, few cases of hypertension can be found, and blood pressure among these groups does not tend to increase with age.</p>
<h3><b>The reasons for the increase in hypertension </b></h3>
<p>There is a genetic disposition to develop hypertension. The recent studies reveal that high calorie foods, a high level of salt intake, the lack of physical activity, and alcohol intake all play a significant role in the increase of hypertension. By examining these reasons alone, we clearly see how important the prohibition of alcohol is and the Prophet’s words of wisdom advising us to eat less bear on our lives and prosperity in both this world and the hereafter.</p>
<h3><b>Excess of body fat (obesity) </b></h3>
<p>Another recent health phenomenon is the huge increase in people suffering from obesity, mainly due to excessive eating and the lack of exercise. Studies related to disease outbreaks (epidemiological studies) show that obesity is clearly associated with hypertension. These studies also reveal a significant increase in people suffering from both obesity and hypertension. According to these studies, 78 percent of the male and 65 percent of the female cases of hypertension are connected to obesity. Similar studies carried out in various countries confirm that a large number of people with high blood pressure were overweight and that losing weight substantially reduced their blood pressure levels. In fact, the blood pressure in some was reduced by losing weight alone, without the need of any medication.</p>
<p>Many studies also evaluated the connection between obesity and hypertension by measuring the level of the leptin, the hormone that controls the appetite, in the body. High levels of leptin induce stimulation in the sympathetic nervous system and shrink the veins (causing an increase in blood pressure). Another reason for the increase in the activity of the sympathetic nervous system of overweight people is the rise in insulin levels, which in most people can be controlled by diet. Finally, the kidneys of overweight people retain greater levels of salt and water, which causes an increase in blood pressure. These conditions, which on many occasions can prove to be very serious, are in fact contrary to the intended physical state of human creation, as the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, declared in these words of warning: “What I fear most for my followers is a large stomach, excessive sleep, idleness, and the lack of certainty (in faith).”</p>
<h3><b>Excessive salt and alcohol </b></h3>
<p>Evidence from both experiments on animals and clinical studies proves that the excessive intake of salt increases blood pressure. In animal experiments, a high intake of salt in the diet of rats showed a rise in blood pressure, which resulted in strokes. In another experiment, more than 0.50 ounces of salt was added to the diet of several chimpanzees for a period of twenty months. The studies showed an increase of 33 mmHg in the systolic blood pressure and 10 mmHg in the diastolic blood pressure, and when the salt was removed from the diet, the chimpanzees’ blood pressure returned to normal levels. Indeed, salt is an important nutrient for the human body. Sodium, potassium, and calcium salts are essential for all nerve cell activity, for muscle movement, and for the osmotic balance of body fluids. Medical science of today stresses the importance of natural foods, and bread, an important part of our diet, meets the body’s daily requirement of sodium. Thus adding salt to our food and exhausting the kidneys is not necessary.</p>
<p>Various clinical studies on humans have shown that excessive salt in the diet increases blood pressure levels. Salt has been used in the human diet for the past 8000 years, since the beginning of agriculture and animal farming. A human’s normal requirement of sodium is 8–10 mmol/per day. However, in economically developed countries, the daily sodium intake of most people has risen to 140–150 mmol per day (8–9 grams), almost 14–15 times more than the normal physiological requirement. In a study carried out on the subject, 10,000 blood pressure sufferers in 32 countries were closely monitored, and the results showed that as the salt intake was reduced, blood pressure levels dropped. In another study, 24 hour urine samples were analyzed, and here too, a low sodium diet showed a decline in blood pressure.</p>
<p>One of the many health risks of alcohol is its serious affect on blood pressure. Clinical studies have proved that the excessive intake of alcohol causes high blood pressure. The frequent cases of high blood pressure in societies of the former socialist countries and economically developed countries of the present are mainly connected to the excessive intake of alcohol.</p>
<p>As a result, the number of high blood pressure cases in the world has exceeded that of contagious diseases, and this is closely connected to our eating and drinking habits. If humans continue to excessively eat and drink as they are at the present, most people will be suffering from high blood pressure in the very near future.</p>
