<p>Athlete’s foot is a frequent infection that millions of people suffer from annually. I once had it during my military service where we had to wear boots almost an entire day. Once during a noon intercession, I performed my ablutions to pray and I placed my feet under the sunlight to dry them. I was also hoping that ultraviolet rays from the sun would be good for the infection. Soon, flies swarmed in between my toes. When I could not bear the excessive itching, I tried to kill the flies until I was stopped by a friend who reminded me of the great sage Bediuzzaman’s comments where he called flies “cleaning workers.” At that time, I also remembered Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) words on flies. So, I patiently endured the nuisance, and repeated the same procedure for the next three or four days. Eventually, my feet were healed and there was no trace of the fungi.</p>
<p>In one of his very interesting hadiths, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is reported to have said the following about flies: “If a fly falls into your drink, dip it into your drink, then throw it away, for on one of its wings is a disease, and on the other is a cure. It dips the wing with the disease to protect itself” [1]. This hadith has been a reason for much controversy mainly due to germ disease theory.  According to Jonathan C. Brown, “even before modern medicine, the Hadith of the Fly was raising skeptical eyebrows and prompting Sunni defensiveness as early as the writings of Ibn Qutayba (d. 276/889)” [2]. Brown also mentions that this hadith “could be false or it could be true, since scientists used the flesh of a snake to help prepare antidotes to its poison” [3].</p>
<p>Before the microscope was invented it was impossible to define microbes or talk about the anatomy or microbiology of flies as we can today. However, the introduction of experimentation and observation as an important scientific method with the Renaissance served as a turning point in Western scientific revolution. Thus, the “proof-based medicine” conception that relies on experimentation and observation emerged as a precursor to today&#8217;s medicinal and scientific research. The importance of perceptions that rely on causes relating to the material world in persuading the human mind cannot be denied. It is harder to make people believe in something unless they are provided with concrete results that appeal to our five senses. We should not rush to deny any claim solely based upon our preconceptions and prior knowledge without doing any research about it; rather, we should pass our judgment on it after experimentation and observation.</p>
<p>Some people may automatically reject the idea that when a fly falls in our food or drink that we should immerse this microbe-carrying insect completely and they may say that this would not eliminate the microbes. Indeed, it may sound reasonable to assume that this disgusting insect that feeds on all sorts of dirt would cause only diseases. If you have an ample supply of food or water and if you do not have the stomach for it, you can of course refrain from eating or drinking such a food or drink. But, you can hardly advise someone who has very little water or food in a desert or at the time of famine to throw away what they have because of a fly.</p>
<p>We should examine different types of flies in laboratory settings using the method of experimentation and observation. First of all, it is very difficult to prove that someone can contract an illness from eating food in which a fly had fallen into although he or she had immersed that fly completely in that food. If it is proven that someone becomes ill due to a fly&#8217;s alighting in their food, then strong objections can be raised. If it is said that there many diseases caused by flies, no one will deny it. The point is not whether flies carry germs, but whether this advice for being protected from the germs carried by flies is correct or not. As a matter of fact, the advice by the Prophet seeks to protect us from diseases that may be caused by germs carried by flies. The great scholar Bediuzzaman’s words on flies also give us an alternative perspective to consider about these “tiny birds”:</p>

<p>“…Flies are dutiful about cleaning away noxious substances or germs that cause disease. By sucking up and absorbing harmful germs, they destroy them, and they cause noxious or poisonous substances to change into other harmless forms, thus preventing the spread of many contagious diseases. A sign that they are both laborers for health and cleansing operatives and chemists, serving many instances of wisdom, is the fact that they exist in extremely great numbers. For the things that are valuable and beneficial are multiplied.” [4]</p>
</blockquote>
<p>The hadith of the Prophet and Bediuzzaman’s commentary encourage us to explore more about flies and whether they can be a source of healing in any way.</p>
<p>Flies are very ubiquitous on earth. There are approximately 125,000 species of flies, but only ten species live in our homes and are of concern to us. They feed on garbage and organic waste materials that act as a breeding ground for microbes such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses. The female fly lays down more than 100 eggs in the dung of some animals or in garbage. After one day, the larva emerges to feed on the surrounding organic materials. In two weeks, they become full-grown flies. In four generations, one female fly can lay 1.5 million eggs, but fortunately the majority die due to weather circumstances or become food for birds, reptiles, amphibians, and other insects. A fly can live for 60 days at most.</p>
<p>Given the ecological balance in nature, one comes to accept that there should be species that will remove all sorts of organic waste, garbage, dead animals or plants, and similar things by eating them. Houseflies feed on the rotting corpses of animals while female horseflies suck blood. How can flies, which act as health workers that are charged with the duty of cleaning the world, digest so many diverse amounts of garbage and waste?</p>
<p>Flies get their nourishment differently from other animals. What other animals do for digestion is done by flies outside their bodies. They do not have teeth-like structures in their mouths in order to chew solid, dry food and therefore have to turn such food into liquid form or split it into 0.45-mm or smaller pieces. In this liquid form, flies can easily suck up their food using their suitably shaped mouths. To do this, flies vomit a saliva-like liquid, containing enzymes and acids, and that disintegrates the solid food into something that can easily be digested in a couple of seconds. In this process, some of the microbes in that waste food can be disintegrated while the rest will be sent to the stomach.</p>
<p>These foods and microbes taken inside in the form of vomit are sent to a sac called a “crop” if they are not small enough to go through the digestive tract. Flies produce fresh saliva regularly during which the vomit moves between their mouths and crops. Eventually, the sufficiently liquefied food is sent to the stomach which contains enzymes and acidic content as well as partially disintegrated microorganisms.</p>
<h3>What does scientific research tell us?</h3>
<p>Based on the theory that flies must have remarkable antimicrobial defenses and resistance to survive the bacteria from rotting dung, meat, and fruit, a team at the department of biological sciences at Macquarie University in Australia set out to identify those antibacterial properties.</p>
<p>“Our research is a small part of a global research effort for new antibiotics, but we are looking where we believe no one has looked before,” said Joanne Clarke, who presented the group&#8217;s findings at the Australian Society for Microbiology Conference in Melbourne.</p>
<p>Clarke&#8217;s research showed that flies produce their own antibiotics, and this was tested on four different fly species. Such research may lead to better treatments for human infections from Escherichia coli and other virulent bacteria even, perhaps, Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).</p>
<p>Upon preliminary results, a global pharmaceutical company decided to support the research over the next six months by trying to isolate antibiotic compounds from the material collected from the flies. The research team is trying to identify the specific antibacterial compounds. As antibiotics that will eventually be invented and chemically synthesized come from the body surface of flies, not from other fungi or bacteria, it is believed that any gene that gives resistance to microbes will not be easily transferred to pathogens and the new antibiotic form will have longer and more effective treatment duration [5].</p>
<p>Later, Russian doctors had developed interest in this topic and observed that flies contain many substances that can be more effective than traditional medications and certain fly larvae have very strong therapeutic effects [6].</p>
<p>Noting that flies should be kept away from hospitals, Professor Juan Alvarez Bravo at the University of Tokyo expressed his support for such research, saying, “But soon we will witness a rapid treatment for many diseases, which consists of extracts from flies” [7].</p>
<p>Some researchers at Auburn University of the United States discovered a protein in the fly’s saliva which can accelerate the lengthy process of healing wounds and chronic skin cracking. Entomologists Ed and Mary Cupp managed to isolate the protein which houseflies inject into their prey to increase blood flow in the skin of their prey. Mary Cupp and surgeon Steven Swaim demonstrated that surgical incisions, skin ulceration, and diabetic foot lesions treated with solutions that combine antibiotics and this protein heal faster and stronger than incisions treated with antibiotics alone [8, 9].</p>
<p>In another study, it was found that epithelial cells forming the inner layers of the front and back intestines of the fly protect it from the bacteria it swallows thanks to a special cuticular lining, and in this way, bacteria never directly touch the intestinal epithelium and cannot give any damage to it. In this study, it was noted that people nurtured a radical approach to flies and that fly control has been abused for the sake of human health, suggesting that flies may be the source of novel germicides that make use of their antimicrobial digestive enzymes, lysozyme, and antimicrobial peptides [10].</p>
<p>Viruses cause many diseases in cattle, sheep, and birds. These diseases include encephalitis, aphthous fever (foot and mouth diseases), and duck plague which can be transferred to people through infected animals. Some crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, bananas, and sugarcane can also be destroyed by viral infections.</p>
<p>Flies carry the viruses of many diseases which are consequently transferred to man&#8217;s food, drink, and body. Of these viral diseases are common flu, measles, mumps, chickenpox, warts, yellow fever, infectious liver diseases, some cases of paralysis, some types of cancer, and some chronic diseases of the central nervous system.</p>
<p>El-Naggar, Zaghloul, from Egypt, indicates that some of the disease-causing viruses may directly infect living beings and cause damage to their cells, while there is a type of virus which infects bacteria cells known as “bacteriophage.” These viruses, which can kill the bacteria they infect in a short time, are known as “virulent bacteriophage.” Those viruses that do not kill the bacteria they infect are called “temperate bacteriophage” [11].</p>
<p>After a bacteriophage infects a bacterium, more than 100 viruses are released from that bacterium and each of these viruses can infect new bacteria. The spreading of infection may continue until all vulnerable bacteria cells die. After it was discovered that bacteriophages are parasites of bacteria, they started to be used in treating the diseases caused by bacteria. However, their use in this manner declined after the discovery of antibiotics. Yet, the interest in phage treatment was revived after the emergence of bacterial resistance to antibiotics [12].</p>
<p>Researchers from Stanford University announced that they found a substance in flies that can improve the human immune system [13].</p>
<p>The work by Rehab Mohammed Atta from the Microbiology and Immunology Department, National Research Center, Cairo, Egypt, is quite remarkable [14]. In this research, the extracts taken separately from the left and right wings of flies were used against the bacteria and fungi calculated on nutrient “agar” media in the laboratory. It was demonstrated there was both bacterial and fungal growth for the left wing extract plates while no bacterial or fungal growth was reported for the right ones.</p>
<p>Given the fact that the garbage and rotting corpses on which flies feed from contain numerous dangerous bacteria, it is quite reasonable that it contains antibacterial materials necessary for its survival. In this case, the fly&#8217;s needs might be of service as sources of antibiotics that can prevent epidemics among human beings, and this may be the reason why they were created in the first place: not to be a source of nuisance but a source of healing for us.</p>
<p>Aj-Taili, et al., from the department of medical microbiology, Qassim University in Saudi Arabia, conducted an experiment using water, honey, and various fruit juices in different cups. They found no germ in the solution in which the whole body of fly was immersed while the solution in which only one wing of the fly was dipped indicated the presence of germs [15].</p>
<p>In sum, we can say that antibacterial materials produced in the bodies of flies protect them against the microbes in their environments and that these microbes can prevent epidemics among human beings. At the very least, this topic deserves in-depth research. Atta&#8217;s study confirms the virtue of the hadith that says, “The best way to release this vital antidote is to dip the fly in a liquid because these substances are concentrated on the outer surface of the fly body and wing.” Abduldaem al-Kaheel refers to this study in his website: “This is logical because the fly has a lot of harmful bacteria on the outside of her body and therefore in order to continue in her life, it should also carry anti-bacterial materials; these materials were furnished by God to protect it from viruses and diseases.” In the light of these studies, the need for conducting more research for obtaining antibiotics from the right wing of the fly is clear [16].</p>

Let me tell you a basic, but important thing: in order to create a piece of art, you need to have great knowledge, will, and power, which will be manifested in that work of art. However, creating a work of art is not enough; you have to protect it from breaking, decay or from getting stolen. You need to take all precautions to protect it from theft, too much exposure to the sun, heat or wind. Maybe you have to treat it with protective chemicals and keep it in cool and enclosed spaces. Similarly, each of the living creatures in this universe is a piece of art and their splendidly created bodies must be protected by a very delicately and perfectly organized system like me, your immune system! Your body’s ability to repel the disease-causing germs is due to this wonderful system.</p>
<p><span id="more-1160"></span></p>
<p>I, the protective system that you call the “immune system,” am divided into different groups and sections, each of which has its own area of expertise. Just like a military unit, each of my groups has to be partially or fully trained before it begins life in my system so that it can properly fulfill its defensive function. “Soldiers” in this protective troop work according to what expertise they have and the type of “enemy” (alien microorganisms) they encounter. Some are equipped with heavy weapons against tough enemies; some produce a special poison with which they kill their enemies by injecting it into their bodies, some work like a waste disposal, smashing up the dead bodies of the enemies, and some of them eat the alien intruders alive when they attack your body. Others produce raw material to arm your body, some turn that material into weapons, some work as defenders, some are signalers, some are rangers and some are equipped with a special intelligence which allows them to recognize the previous invaders and destroy them more easily at their future encounter. In this intelligence system, which works like an information center, the soldiers check the dangerous invaders and remember their previous experience with them. Then, they develop a strategy to fight against those invaders. If the enemy is known well, the defense against it will be easier.</p>
<p>Now, using this analogy, I will talk about your enemies and the features of my soldiers that are placed in your body to fight against them. However, I have to remind you of something first: as you know, every army has to have a top commander. Similarly, there is someone who has placed such a perfect system like me in your body, someone who has boundless knowledge and power, and has no one else superior to Him or has no one to receive orders and instructions. That is our Lord God Almighty. Since He knows very well what kinds of enemies you will face, He has created me with all my troops so that you can be defended against those enemies.</p>
<p>The enemies of your body are germs, which enter your body through different passage ways, including digestion, respiration, excretion and the skin. “Germ” is a general term referring to many kinds of micro-organisms. Some of them are bacteria, some are fungi and some are viruses. Your body needs different special tactics to defend against each group of germs and my soldiers are quite talented in those tactics. I have to be always watchful against germs coming from outside. Not only that, but I also have to be careful about inner enemies, that is, the cells in your body which suddenly turn into “terrorists” becoming harmful and spoiling the system. You call those cells “cancerous.” It is a great challenge for me to cope with those cells because they originate from among your very own cells and they know our tactics very well. Nevertheless, with God’s help, we can defeat them. However, when too much stress and anxiety weaken me I might miss some of those cancerous cells, which will grow and become tumors. In fact, cancerous cells develop much more in number than is commonly known. But my soldiers constantly check every single cell that is formed in your body and try to see whether it is normal or not. As soon as they discover a cancerous “terrorist” cell, they try to quickly destroy it. However, some cancerous cells are disguised like a wolf wearing a sheepskin so that they can avoid detection. My soldiers make rounds and check the cells from outside by only looking at their skin. Thus, they can be manipulated. All of your cells, including those with germs or cancer, contain protein with a special code which identifies the cells as being yours. When my soldiers encounter our fellow cells carrying those coded proteins, they release them. But the enemies who do not carry this code (or password) are immediately caught and destroyed. When we have diseases like cancer, however, the cancerous cells may evade our “rounds man” because they know this password. Sometimes the opposite may happen: my soldiers get confused and cannot identify their fellow cells despite carrying the right password, assume that they are enemies and start to attack them. These types of diseases, called Autoimmune diseases, emerge with a quite complicated mechanism which is a puzzle even for me! For example, during rheumatoid arthritis, which is among the many long-lasting and unrecoverable diseases, my soldiers attack and gradually destroy the tissues like cartilage, cardiac muscle, eye lenses, and the tubes of the kidneys with which they share a body. In fact, when we are created as a whole system (when you are only an embryo in your mother’s womb), some of my soldiers make an agreement with the other cells of your body, announcing that they will forever stay friends with them, will show tolerance to them and will only attack the enemies. But, somehow this agreement is broken later; my soldiers do not obey me anymore.</p>
<p>Now it is time for my group of soldiers to introduce themselves:</p>
<p>The most general term by which we are identified with is white blood cells or leukocyte. We appear approximately 6,000 to 7,000 times in each cubic millimeter of human blood. The other blood cells, which are called red blood cells (erythrocyte) are red in color; it is for this reason that we are called white. Since blood vessels can reach to the remotest edges of the body, we roam around the body through those vessels and look for work to do. Of course, not everyone can do everything. So, we are first divided into two sections. The cells in the first section contain microscopic granules, so they are called granular leukocyte. The cells in the second section do not contain such granules, so they are called agranular leukocyte. Those sections are divided into groups among themselves. The first section has three groups: neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils. The second section has two groups named monocyte and lymphocyte.</p>
<div align="left">The most abundant cells (65–70% of white blood cells), neutrophils, move like amoebas, extending their feet and getting close to germs which they quickly gobble up (phagocytose). The digestion enzymes that are carried by those granules inside the neutrophils smash and eat up the trapped germ. The number of those soldier cells increases at the event of any infection. The fact that those guarding cells can sense, find, and engulf germs or antigens is a clear miracle of God. Some physiologists call this action chemotaxis, a phenomenon in which cells move according to certain chemicals in their surroundings. They only “name” this phenomenon, without really explaining why those cells move towards that particular chemical. Indeed, chemotaxis or moving towards the chemical substance is the apparent cause only. Beyond this material cause and effect relationship, you should be able to see and contemplate God’s wonderful knowledge and power and His compassionate and divine meanings.</div>
<p><b>Eosinophills: </b> You may not know much about these soldiers that make up 12% of the whole protective body. However, during allergic reactions and diseases caused by parasites, the number of these soldiers increases. They complete the effect of the antibodies produced against the antigens. Some chemical substances like histamine appear as a reaction to antigens, such as itchiness, rash, and swelling. Eosinophils reduce the effects of those substances and the symptoms.</p>
<p><b>Basophils, </b> which are the least in number, make up the 0.5% of the body. Those soldiers are present mostly in the scars that are healing or in highly infected areas. The granules inside basophils contain two very important substances called heparin and histamine. Histamine helps expand the blood vessels and accelerates the release of active substances within me from the blood vessel walls, enabling them to reach to the affected area. Heparin also prevents the blockage of blood vessels because of blood clot.</p>
<div align="left"><b>Monocytes</b> form the second section are the most important group and make up 3–9% of the body. While my previous soldiers originated and grew in bone marrow, these soldiers originate in lymphoid organs such as the liver, spleen, and thymus, which make up the reticuloendothelial system. Since these cells are powerful “eaters”, they engulf the antigens and the old red blood cells that do not work well anymore; therefore, they clean up your organs. Because the monocytes are mobile cells, they chase germs when they go out of the blood vessels and enter among tissues. These “greedy” cells take the name macrophage when they reside outside of the bloodstream. They are capable of eating not only a certain antigen, but also different kinds of antigens. Moreover, they increase the stimulation sensitivity of the lymphocytes against the antigens.</div>
<p><b> Lymphocytes</b> of the second section are the group of soldiers which goes through special training and has expertise in many subjects. They make up 20-25% of the soldiers in my system. Those soldiers detect antigens and germs and remove them from the body. Every soldier has a detector which identifies a certain antigen. Therefore, in your blood, there are millions of lymphocyte soldiers, which are different from each other and do not have a pair. For any antigen of a germ, you will definitely find a lymphocyte that finds and kills it. Those soldiers can be grouped according to their appearances, as small, medium, and large lymphocytes. Each group has different special features. We can also divide them according to their maturation and training process as B-lymphocytes and T-lymphocytes. Although both of them originate from stem cells in the bone marrow, T-lymphocytes mature in the thymus before they move to the other lymph tissues such as the spleen, liver, and tonsils (Thymus is a gland in the chest that talked about itself in the previous issue). B-lymphocytes, however, mature in the bone marrow, and go directly to the tonsils, appendicitis, spleen and other lymph tissues. When the T lymphocytes mature in the bone marrow, they acquire different new features. Some of them work as T helper cell, some work as natural killer T-cells and some work as suppressor T-cell. A helper T-cell, which is triggered by an antigen that is specific to it, secretes lymphokines, which makes B-cells produce antibodies. Among those lymphokines, interleukin-2 activates the natural killer T-cells, which kill the infected cells. The killer T-cells do not bind directly to an antigen. Rather, they secrete a substance that kills the infected cell after joining with the antibodies that were previously bound to the infected cells. On average, T-cells live 2-4 years; some, however, live more than 10 years. Today, the defense mechanism of the T-lymphocytes creates an issue in terms of organ transplantation. If, for some reason, a foreign organ (a kidney or heart, for example) is transplanted into the body, the T-lymphocytes attack that organ immediately. Those “headless” soldiers do not know that the body really needs that organ and try to eliminate it, therefore, leading to transplant rejection or tissue incompatibility. The T-lymphocytes treat the foreign organ the same way as they do to the cancerous cells: they attack and try to destroy it. For this reason, the immunologists are trying to discover medicines that will help them control the soldier T-lymphocytes whenever they need to be stopped.</p>
<div align="left">When the B-lymphocytes encounter their specific antigen, they clone and multiply fast. As “in union there is strength,” they form a group that consists of the cells with the same features in order to attack the antigens. Each cell in this group makes an antibody, in other words immunoglobulin, which neutralizes that antigen. The production of the antibody continues for a few more days until the germs are removed from the body completely. Some B-cells, which are called memory B-cells, stimulate not the release, but the reproduction of the antibodies. Thus, when an antigen that belongs to a particular germ reappears, again the antibodies are secreted automatically. As you know, when you are a child, you are more likely to become ill, and the older you get the less illness you face. The reason for this is, since these memory cells remember past germs, they start fighting against them the moment the germs enter your body and before they make you worse. The time allowed for storing every different germ in mind differs. For example, after the memory cells have been acquainted with the measles germ, they never forget it. When they are dying, those memory cell soldiers pass on the codes of the germs in their memory to newly generated cells. The vaccines are made with inactivated antigens to use against the germs. Do you know why, as a growing child, you need to get shots periodically? It is for you to build immunity towards many different diseases at different times.</div>
<p>Dear Peter, have you ever thought about how all this happens? While you have no idea about a germ that might enter your body, those memory cells, which are placed in your blood with a boundless compassion by our Creator, remember an enemy that they saw years ago, and begin to make weapons right away. Since those cells are devoid of reason and consciousness, to operate them there has to be Someone with a great knowledge and will.</p>
<p>The lymph nodes are production centers for the lymphocytes found at some particular places in the body. They resemble variously sized military headquarters. The lymphocytes are produced mostly at infection sites, which are the little lymph tissue groups located under the epithelium that lines along the walls of the digestive tube, respiratory track, and the bladder. When fighting with bacterial infections the lymph nodes swell and enlarge as much as 1–2 cm. In addition to the lymph nodes that extend through the lymph vessels, the areas such as nape, groin and the axilla (underarm) also contain lymph nodes. If you get an upper respiratory tract infection, the lymph nodes at your tonsils and neck areas become swollen. If you get a urinary track infection the nodes in your groin area become swollen. As for digestive track infections, it is the responsibility of the lymphocytes in your appendix to fight against germs. Some scientists view this organ, which is an extension of the cecum (the blind gut), as a “dead” piece of intestine. Both the appendix and tonsils are quite useful organs that produce lymphocytes in normal circumstances; they are not some useless remnants. For that reason, it is not right to remove them when it is not really necessary. However, we have to remember the proverb that says, “We salt the food so that it does not smell bad; but, what do we do if the salt itself smells bad? Then, we have to get rid of the salt.” Similarly, in some bodies where my system is weak and so is lymphocyte production, those areas become home to germs and you have to remove them.</p>
<p>Other than the soldiers of the immune system, several organs in your body have their own ways of protecting your body. Those organs do not have soldiers like in my system; theirs are like a “civil defense.” Chief among those are your skin which works as a natural barricade against the entrance of the germs, the mucous membrane that lines along the walls of your mouth and inner nose, interferon which is a substance produced by your cells against viruses, and an antibacterial substance called lysozyme which exists in your tears and sweat. Therefore, sweating, crying, and runny nose are not things to be ashamed of; they are only the protective systems that have been naturally placed in your body by our Lord God.</p>
<p>Dear Peter, I think I should stop here although there are still so many features of me that you have to discover. After all, beneath all diseases and deaths you will find disorders related to me. The biochemical processes in which many of my soldiers operate are not exactly known yet. If those are revealed, doctors will likely succeed in healing many other diseases. However, sooner or later you will reach the destined end: death. No creation can be immortal; there will definitely be a problem and you will have to leave this world, wherein you are only a guest. If you carefully contemplate the works of art in your body, in the hereafter you will have solved the riddle of the delicacies of those works. Of course, everyone’s time of death is unknown. Therefore, in this limited time, give your organs their due and give thanks to the God Almighty who gave you those gifts. Live according to His will, and always remember to glorify Him. Goodbye, Peter! May you and your troop be healthy!</p>

<p>The skin, which covers a total surface area of approximately 1.65 m2 and which weighs in total about 9.5 kg, is surely the largest and the heaviest organ of the human body; yet its miraculous functions are still a puzzle to us.</p>
<h3><b>A layered structure</b></h3>
<p>The human skin is composed of three layers: the epidermis (outermost layer), the dermis (vascular connective tissue below the epidermis) and the hypodermis (the deepest portion of the skin), each of which has a very complex metabolism of its own. Each of the structures of which the skin is comprised has a wide variety of functions; all of these functions must be in order if we are to maintain our good health. In particular the epidermis and the dermis each have their own distinct functions, but also share some duties, and all of these are essential for the survival of the human. The thickness of the skin varies from 8 mm on the palms and soles of the feet to nearly less than 1 mm on the eyelids. Within the epidermis are found four difÂ¬ferent types of cells that undertake different tasks; the appearance of our skin, in terms of texture, evenness of color, hydration, and overall youthfulness and constitutional health, is greatly dependent on the interaction of these cellular functions.</p>
<h3><b>A single organ with several functions</b></h3>
<p>It is very interesting that the majority of people are not aware of the fact that the skin is one organ.</p>
<p>Not only does it cover the body, our skin performs many amazing tasks such as,</p>
<p>-helping with water conservation,</p>
<p>-helping with the maintenance of body temperature,</p>
<p>-perception of touch</p>
<p>-providing a barrier to harmful germs,</p>
<p>-storing fat,</p>
<p>-storing vitamin D,</p>
<p>-acting as a mechanical barrier against knocks or bumps,</p>
<p>-helping in the removal of the waste products of metabolism</p>
<p>-providing protection against environmental influences, such as cold or high temperatures, and destructive ultraviolet rays, as well.</p>
<p>It is common knowledge that the major task of our skin is to protect the human body from harmful environmental factors. It is, indisputable that the fundamental purpose of the skin is to provide a flexible, protective shield between us and the outside world. This is made possible by the layers of flattened epithelial cells which hinder micro-organisms and chemicals from entering the body.</p>
<h3><b>Constant replacement</b></h3>
<p>The benefits we have mentioned would not last long, however, if skin cells were not renewed. This amazing regeneration process happens through a replacement operation that is dependent on a continuous cell division in the basal layer. As the cells move towards the outer surface they lose their softness. Consequently, they gradually die off and stiffen. Dead cells are constantly sloughed off from the upper surface of the epidermis and are continuously shed; they are replaced by new cells that are generated in the deeper layers. This process is often referred to as “cellular renewal.” As cells progress through the various stages, they finally stiffen and die or keratinize. This dead cell layer, or keratinocytes, makes up the outermost layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum. These hardened and cornified cells are designed by our Creator to act as a protective barrier; otherwise, living cells would not be able to provide the protective qualities necessary to isolate the living tissue from exposure to possible detrimental substances and organisms. The living epidermal cells die by an extremely sophisticated process, displaying a voluntary self-sacrifice that enables humans survive, an evident blessing from our Most Gracious Lord.</p>
<h3><b>Regulation of body temperature</b></h3>
<p>The regulation of temperature is considered to be one of the major duties given to the skin. We naturally lose water through constant evaporation throughout our lives. It is of utmost importance that the loss of too much body fluid is prevented. By narrowing or widening the capillary blood vessels and also by means of numerous sweat glands, evaporation on the surface enables our skin to become cooler or warmer, in a strictly limited range of temperatures. The fat cells of the skin prevent losing too much heat, and when the body overheats, the skin’s extensive small blood vessels carry warm blood to the surface where it is cooled. So, as we can deduce from this, the main task of the skin is to prevent the loss of body fluids through evaporation.</p>
<p>Another task of the skin is the storing of fat and the production of vitamin D [25-dihydroxycholecalciferol]. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is found in food and can also be processed in our body after exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. Sunshine is a significant source of vitamin D because the UV rays from the sun stimulate the synthesis of vitamin D in the skin. This fundamental feature of our skin is, clearly, indispensable to our skeletal development.</p>
<h3><b>The witness</b></h3>
<p>The human skin has also a function in sense communication with the environment. It gathers sensory information from the environment; this is performed by means of a great number of receptors (for example, those for warmth and cold) and intraepithelial nerve endings. Nerve cells in the skin form the body’s first contact with the outer world. At the moment of birth, an infant’s first experiences of the physical world are perceived through the sense of touch. Nerve cells allow the skin to receive and transmit signals from touch, pain, tickling, etc. As the skin is the boundary between a living creature and the world around it, it is also the physical interface between the creature and other creatures and the world. Hence it is the location of all contact, good or bad in kind. The Qur’an declares that the skin will also testify when we are called to account on the Day of Judgment:</p>
<p>Until when they reach it, their ears, and their eyes, and their skins will bear witness against them as to all that they did habitually. They will ask their skins, “Why have you borne witness against us?” They will answer: “God Who makes everything speak has made us speak.” It is He Who has created you in the first instance, and to Him you are being brought back. You did not seek to veil yourselves (when sinning) without ever considering that your ears or your eyes or your skins would one day bear witness against you. (Fussilat 41:21-22)</p>
<p>As pointed out in the verse …the abode of the Hereafter is truly alive (29:64), everything in the Abode of Hereafter will be alive. So, like every part of a human being, the skin will bear witness for or against them. The verse implies that it is the medium where all our contact is recorded and it will be an ideal witness.</p>
<h3><b>Wounds and healing</b></h3>
<p>Another astounding mission of our skin is its role in healing wounds. The human skin has remarkable selfhealing properties, which obviously point to an intelligent design. A skin wound heals from the bottom up and from the edges inward. In the first stages of healing, the basic connective tissue of the skin moves into the injured area. The depth of the wound determines how well it will heal; the regeneration process begins immediately, but we still do not know what the trigger is. As a wound heals, the edges are drawn together by a process called contracture. The most amazing part of this phenomenon are the later stages of healing. It is as if all the cells are fully aware when and where to end the repair. Nobody knows why they abruptly stop working and how they finalize restoration.</p>
<h3><b>A shield against germs</b></h3>
<p>Our skin also serves us by organizing and activating the immune system. Some specific cells, which form a network in the epidermis or in the outer layer of skin, play an important part in this activity, by regulating the immune response to germs. As a major contributor to the body’s immune system, constituting the first line of de fense in keeping out bacteria, viruses, and other organisms that invade the body, the skin is home to enormous quantities of T-lymphocytes, or T-cells. Those domestic defense soldiers attack and destroy bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites, toxins, and cancerous cells that can cause disease. Thus, the skin is both a watertight barrier surrounding and protecting our body from a number of external assaults, never letting the undesired pathogenic germs penetrate.</p>
<p>Our Almighty and Everlasting Creator has granted us this gift of skin. He knows what those who are in need are in need of, and it is obvious that He is aware of the need of our cells, our organs, and our living metabolism, thus He has given the most favorable structural design to the human body. Just before we pray to Him, we should remember that the more consistent our demands, the more bountiful He will ordain. Frankly, there seems to be no way to explain the miracle of skin other than attributing it to the All- Beneficent God.</p>

<p>Good day my dear friends! I know you are tired of me, I bother you so often, especially in hot weather; but would you mind listening to me a little? I don&#8217;t understand why you are so proud! Did God create just you, and someone else created me? Some people do claim that I and all the other creatures evolved just by chance, in a process they call evolution, but I wouldn&#8217;t pay attention to them if I were you. Our Lord, God, created you and me, and the whole universe. Then why do you see me as being so unimportant? Of course, my Lord made humans superior and gave them an honorable place in this world, but this is only for those humans who recognize God Almighty and who pray to Him. If someone does not recognize the Creator, then this person will fall lower than me; I know my Lord, and I do not change my behavior. I don&#8217;t do anything but what He taught me. True, I am not tested as you all are, but I am happy with my lot. I carry out my duties obediently.</p>
<p>Although I do many useful things, most of you (except for the zoologists among you) aren&#8217;t aware of what my uses are. Some people even say, &#8220;Why has this black bug been created? It is of no use.&#8221;</p>
<p>If you just look at my wings, you can see that they are like a perfect work of art. Think about it, what would be more difficult, producing a large watch or a small and sophisticated one? Obviously producing a small watch is much more complicated. But one must remember that nothing is easy or difficult for God, He just says &#8220;Be&#8221; and He can create anything. By saying, &#8220;Be&#8221; He can create a microorganism or an elephant in an instant.</p>
<p>Just as you have organs that carry out the biological functions in your body that are necessary for your survival, I also have organs and systems in my body which carry out similar functions. The only difference between yours and mine is their structure and working principle. For instance, we both have hearts. Your heart pumps the blood to the body via the veins, and my heart pumps the blood to the spaces between my organs. You use your lungs for breathing while I have capillary tubes called trachea which transfer air directly to my tissues. The organs in my head are composed of many small particles. Each one of my eyes is created from hundreds of small hexagonal structures called ommatidia. Each has its own lens, a pigment cell that isolates it from the others, and a crystal cone. A special protein called chitin covers my body. Each one of my hairs acts as a special receiver, allowing me to detect all vibrations. Chitin is made up of a protein, which is durable and not permeable to water.</p>
<p>My mouth is shaped like a tube, while my tongue is like a sponge, helping me to taste my food. My feet, made up of chitin, are very thin and formed of many parts with a hook at the tip, making it easy for me to climb vertical surfaces.</p>
<p>There are hollow tubes in my wings, making them very light and strong. The hammer-like organs (halter organs) under my wings help me to balance while flying. There are some know-it-alls out there who claim that these organs were secondary wings that lost their function during evolution, but they seem to forget that there are many insects that have secondary wings. If this is so, why did I need to &#8220;lose&#8221; mine? It is hard to understand why these people do not try to understand reality. Actually, God created me with one pair of wings and two organs to help with balancing. These organs have nothing to do with mutations, adaptation, selection or evolution. Although my ancestors did mutate at times as all living things have done, we have never changed or evolved. Some of us are weak and some are strong; this is a rule of God. This rule is necessary for the ecological balance to be maintained. Some flies will be food for other living creatures, while some will survive to produce more flies. I have not heard of any other flies evolving into a new living creature.</p>
<p>I can fly better than you. You have imagination and knowledge, and you have the ability to improve yourselves, yet you still have not been able to invent a machine that can fly as well as I can. I can turn a somersault in a tight space. I can walk on the ceiling. I can sense the approach of your hand. I can take off so easily that I do not even need a &#8220;runway&#8221; like airplanes do before taking off. Airplanes can be used for destroying other things, but us flies help to build a better world. My Creator (God) has given me coordination in flight; I do not crash into other things and do not cause any damage while flying. The Qur&#8217;an (22:73) says: &#8220;Oh mankind! A parable is set forth, so listen to it: Surely, those whom you invoke, apart from God, will never create a fly even if they combine together for the purpose. If the fly takes something from them, they cannot rescue it from him.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Qur&#8217;an is a miraculous book; yet, unfortunately some people do not understand this yet. Even if all human beings were to work together, they would not be able to build a small &#8220;fly&#8221;. If I take something from you, you cannot get it back from me. For example, when I snatch a piece of your food, I simply pour digestive enzymes on it and it melts. These enzymes break the food into pieces and make them liquid. Then I am able to drink this liquid. Well now, it would be impossible for you to convert this food back to its original form. Let me show you my nutrition cycle on the right.</p>
<p>When someone mentions the words &#8220;flight and insect&#8221;, it is most normal to think of only one insect, the common house fly, but there are in fact many species of flying insects: approximately 90,000. Since we have wings, we are all called &#8220;diptera&#8221;. There are many of us on the earth; from this one can conclude that there will be useful as well as harmful insects among us. Some of our friends take pollen from flower to flower, making honey for you to eat. We eat a variety of foods; some eat meat, some eat vegetables, while others eat fruit.</p>
<p>My friends and I who belong to the Musca type are the most frequently encountered flies in your neighborhood. We, like the other species of flying insects, increase our reproduction rate with increases in temperature. We produce large numbers of eggs. The maggots that you see in rotten food are in fact my larvae. The female fly leaves her eggs on the food you leave out in the open. These eggs hatch in a few days, the time being longer or shorter depending on the temperature. The larvae have a great appetite for everything and they grow fast as they eat everything they encounter. Then they enter a dormant period and retreat into cocoons. After a short while, they come out with bodies that are totally different anatomically. If you were to tell this to someone without a great deal of know-ledge, they would never believe that these crawling larvae will turn into flying creatures one day. It is hard to predict or understand such a huge change. There lies a great wisdom in both our forms. For example, if we did not exist, only bacteria would be able to help decay the dead and this would take too long. But, thanks to my larvae and their presence everywhere in large numbers, this process is completed in a matter of few days. Due to their speedy consumption of decaying matter, maggots have been used often in medicine. They have been used to get rid of decaying tissue on the wounds that aren&#8217;t healing, and in this way they speed up the healing process.</p>
<p>Now, I also want to remind you of an unfairness that you do to me and all other flies. As you know, our eggs develop and spread fast during the warm summer season; each of us can produce hundreds of eggs. We go all over the place to find food and sometimes we find it in your trash or in animal droppings. Those who see us in these places mistakenly accuse us of carrying and spreading disease. But the reverse is true; we consume the germs that spread quickly in hot weather. These germs grow on food all by themselves, we don&#8217;t produce them. Germs are living creatures too, and they use their abilities bestowed on them by God to grow everywhere. All we do is clean the environment by eating them as we feed. We are able to digest germs thanks to the strong digestive enzymes that we carry. Despite what is believed, I am a clean animal. I clean myself all the time, using the digestive enzymes in my saliva. If it weren&#8217;t for me, the germs would grow and spread faster.</p>
<p>I hope that from now on you won&#8217;t try to shoo me away when you see me on your hand. Instead, I hope that you will watch how I move and observe me more closely; witness the fine art in me.
